Abstract

A prosthetic intervertebral spacer is disclosed. The spacer preferably includes a body and an interface extending away from the body for use during implantation of the spacer. Methods of implanting the spacer and tools used during such procedure are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A prosthetic intervertebral spacer comprising a body having a front end, a rear end, anterior and posterior sides each extending between the front and rear ends, and top and bottom surfaces each connecting the anterior and posterior sides and extending between the front and rear ends, at least one of the top and bottom surfaces including a plurality of teeth, each of the plurality of teeth having a flat uppermost surface and a base, the plurality of teeth touching one another at their respective bases, wherein the flat uppermost surface of at least one of the plurality of teeth is square-shaped;

and an interface extending rearwardly away from at least a rear-facing surface at the rear end of the body, the interface extending along an arcuate path and being connected to the body along an arcuate periphery thereof from the rear-facing surface to a posterior-facing surface of the body, wherein the interface is a rail including a neck portion connected to the body and a lip portion connected to the neck portion, the lip portion being wider than the neck portion in a direction extending between the top and bottom surfaces.

2. The spacer of claim 1, wherein the anterior side of the body defines fenestrations for allowing bone growth.

3. The spacer of claim 1, wherein the plurality of teeth contact one another to completely cover a continuous portion of the at least one of the top and bottom surfaces.

4. The spacer of claim 1, wherein the other of the top and bottom surfaces includes a plurality of teeth each having a flat uppermost surface and a base and touching one another at their respective bases.

5. The spacer of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of radiographic markers disposed within the body.

6. The spacer of claim 5, wherein the plurality of radiographic markers are each comprised of tantalum.

7. The spacer of claim 1, wherein the neck portion separates the lip portion from the body at a first rail segment.

8. The spacer of claim 7, further including a second rail segment separated from the first rail segment by a notch.

9. The spacer of claim 8, wherein the notch extends in a direction substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the spacer.

10. The spacer of claim 8, wherein the first rail segment is disposed on the rear end of the spacer, and the second rail segment is disposed on the posterior side of the spacer.

11. The spacer of claim 1, wherein the neck portion and the lip portion form a T-shape.

12. The spacer of claim 1, wherein the rear end is curved, and curves of the rear end and at least a portion of the arcuate path lie on concentric circles.

13. The spacer of claim 1, wherein the front end includes a steering element configured to mate with an adjacent vertebral body to cause rotation of the spacer.

14. The spacer of claim 1, wherein at least one aperture extends between the top and bottom surfaces.

15. A prosthetic intervertebral spacer comprising:

a body having a front end, a rear end, anterior and posterior sides each extending between the front and rear ends, and top and bottom surfaces each connecting the anterior and posterior sides and extending between the front and rear ends, at least one of the top and bottom surfaces including a plurality of teeth, each of the plurality of teeth having a flat uppermost surface and a base, the plurality of teeth touching one another at their respective bases; and

an interface extending away from the body, the interface extending along an arcuate path and being connected to the body along an arcuate periphery thereof from a rear-facing surface to the a posterior-facing surface of the body, wherein the interface is a rail including a neck portion connected to the body and a lip portion connected to the neck portion, the lip portion being wider than the neck portion in a direction extending between the top and bottom surfaces,

wherein the rear end is curved, and curves of the rear end and at least a portion of the arcuate path lie on concentric circles.

16. A prosthetic intervertebral spacer comprising:

a body defined by an outer wall having a convexly curved and tapered front end, a convexly curved rear end, a convex anterior side and a concave posterior side each extending between the front and rear ends, and top and bottom surfaces each connecting the anterior and posterior sides and extending between the front and rear ends, the anterior side of the body defining fenestrations for allowing bone growth, at least one of the top and bottom surfaces including a plurality of teeth, each of the plurality of teeth having a flat uppermost surface and a base, the plurality of teeth touching one another at their respective bases;

an interface protruding from the outer wall, the interface extending rearwardly away from at least a rear-facing surface at the rear end of the body, the interface extending along an arcuate path and being connected to the body along an arcuate periphery thereof from the rear-facing surface to a posterior-facing surface of the body, wherein the interface is a rail including a neck portion connected to the body and a lip portion connected to the neck portion, the lip portion having a first dimension greater than a second dimension of the neck portion, the first and second dimensions extending between the top and bottom surfaces; and

a plurality of radiographic markers disposed within the body, wherein one of the plurality of radiographic markers is disposed at the front end of the spacer and offset so that it is nearer to the posterior side than to the anterior side.

17. The spacer of claim 16, wherein the outer wall has a third dimension greater than the first dimension, the third dimension extending between the top and bottom surfaces, and the neck portion separating the lip portion from the body at a first rail segment.

18. The spacer of claim 16, wherein the plurality of teeth contact one another to completely cover a continuous portion of the at least one of the top and bottom surfaces.

19. The spacer of claim 16, wherein another of the plurality of radiographic markers is disposed in the convex anterior side of the outer wall between the front and rear ends of the spacer.
