Enhanced flexibility neurovascular catheter
First Claim
1. An enhanced flexibility neurovascular catheter, comprising:
- an elongate flexible body, having a proximal end, a distal end, a side wall defining a central lumen, and a proximal zone and a distal zone being separated by a transition region extending from the proximal zone to the distal zone, the side wall comprising;
a tubular inner liner;
a tie layer separated from the lumen by the inner liner;
a helical coil surrounding the tie layer and extending a length from the distal end of at least about 20% of the length of the elongate flexible body, the length less than or equal to a length of the distal zone, adjacent windings of the coil spaced progressively further apart in the distal direction;
a tubular braid surrounding the inner liner, the tubular braid being proximal to the helical coil; and
an outer jacket surrounding the helical coil and the tubular braid, the outer jacket having a durometer of no more than about 35 D along the entire length of the distal zone and a durometer of at least about 60 D along an entire length of the proximal zone;
wherein the outer jacket is formed along the transition region from a plurality of tubular segments, the tubular segments each having a durometer between the durometer of the outer jacket along the proximal zone and the durometer of the outer jacket along the distal zone, each of the durometers decreasing in the distal direction, the transition region being no longer than about 5 cm.

Abstract
A catheter is provided, such as for distal neurovascular access or aspiration. The catheter includes an elongate flexible body, having a proximal end, a distal end and a side wall defining a central lumen. A distal zone of the side wall includes a tubular inner liner, a tie layer separated from the lumen by the inner liner, a helical coil surrounding the tie layer, adjacent windings of the coil spaced progressively further apart in the distal direction. An outer jacket surrounds the helical coil. The outer jacket is formed from a plurality of tubular segments positioned end to end, coaxially about the coil. The flexural load profile of the catheter as a function of catheter length is configured to provide enhanced distal flexibility while maintaining high backup support.
