1. An electronic device, comprising:
- a haptic priming and alert system comprising a haptic output device; and
a processing device operably connected to the haptic priming and alert system and adapted to;
detect an alert condition indicating the haptic priming and alert system should output a haptic alert;
in response to detecting the alert condition, determine whether to output a haptic priming cue before the haptic alert based on at least one of;
an elapsed time from a user interaction with the electronic device;
a detected user activity;
a motion of the electronic device;
oran operational state of the electronic device;
in response to a determination to output the haptic priming cue, cause the haptic output device of the haptic priming and alert system to output the haptic priming cue before producing the haptic alert; and
in response to a determination not to output the haptic priming cue, cause the haptic output device of the haptic priming and alert system to output the haptic alert without a corresponding haptic priming cue;
wherein;
the haptic priming cue is below a conscious perceptual threshold that is selected so that the haptic priming cue is imperceptible or barely perceptible to a user for an entire duration of the haptic priming cue; and
the haptic priming cue has at least one of a distinct, intensity or waveform from the haptic alert.

11. A method for priming a haptic alert of an electronic device, the method comprising:

detecting an alert condition that indicates the electronic device should output the haptic alert; in response to detecting an occurrence of the alert condition, determining whether to output a haptic priming cue before the haptic alert based on at least one of; an elapsed time from a user interaction with the electronic device; a detected user activity; a motion of the electronic device;
oran operational state of the electronic device; in response to a determination to output the haptic priming cue; outputting the haptic priming cue before producing the haptic alert on the electronic device, the haptic priming cue being below a threshold of conscious human perception that is selected so that the haptic priming cue is imperceptible or barely perceptible to a user for an entire duration of the haptic priming cue; and after outputting at least a portion of the haptic priming cue, outputting the haptic alert on the electronic device; and in response to a determination not to output the haptic priming cue, outputting the haptic alert on the electronic device without outputting the haptic priming cue;
