Abstract

A system and method to control environmental parameters of predefined zones within a structure. An embodiment of the system uses damper assemblies that are entirely wireless as a result of energy capturing devices which convert air flow within the HVAC system ductwork into electrical current and a wireless control module that remove the need for hard-wiring for power or control. Still further, an embodiment of the system uses wireless components to monitor the environmental parameters of a structure'"'"'s zones, process and communicate necessary zone adjustments, and actuate system components.

Claims

1. A control system to wirelessly control environmental parameters of a predefined zone in a forced air HVAC system, the control system comprising:

a damper associated with the predefined zone, the damper comprising;

a rail for securing the damper on an air duct of the predefined zone,

a blade assembly connected to the rail, the blade assembly having a damper module and a blade coupled to the damper module, wherein the damper module is configured to move the blade between an open and closed state to regulate air flow through the air duct,

a supplemental power source configured to supply power to the damper module, and

a scavenger assembly having an impeller and a scavenger module that stores power generated by rotation of the impeller in the air duct and supplies power to the damper module,

wherein the damper operates in a first mode using power supplied only by the scavenger module when air flow is greater than or equal to a predefined rate, and wherein the damper operates in a second mode using combination of power supplied by both the scavenger module and the supplemental power source when air flow is less than the predefined rate;

a wireless temperature controller associated with the damper, configured to monitor a zone temperature and humidity in the predefined zone, to receive as input data representative of a desired temperature for the predefined zone, and to communicate data representative of the temperature in the predefined zone and the desired temperature and to request service at the predefined zone; and

a control box in wireless communication with the damper and the wireless temperature controller, the control box configured to adjust a position of the blade to regulate the flow of forced air inside the air duct of the predefined zone based on the data representative of the zone temperature and the data representative of the desired temperature received from the temperature controller, wherein the control box is further coupled to the forced air HVAC system and configured to control operation of the forced air HVAC system.

2. The control system of claim 1, wherein the scavenger module further comprises a battery that is operable to power the damper.

The control system of claim 1, wherein the control box is further configured to communicate the data representative of the zone temperature and the desired temperature received from the wireless temperature controller to a remote computing device outside of a wireless network associated with the control box.

4. The control system of claim 1, wherein the control box comprises an integrated wireless communication component and the damper comprises a wireless control module adapted to wirelessly communicate with the integrated wireless communication component of the control box.

The control system of claim 1, comprising a second damper associated with a second air duct in the predefined zone, wherein the control box is configured to adjust a position of the damper and the second damper to regulate the flow of forced air inside the air duct and the second air duct of the predefined zone.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the control box communicates with the first and second dampers in a star topology configuration.

7. The control system of claim 1, wherein the control box is configured to wirelessly control environmental parameters of a plurality of predefined zones.

8. The control system of claim 1, further comprising an outdoor temperature sensor and a leaving air temperature sensor in communication with the control box, wherein the outdoor temperature sensor and a leaving air temperature sensor provide protection against overheating or freezing.

9. The control system of claim 1, further comprising:

a user computing device configured to enable a user to wirelessly access the control box and to control the control system; and

an administrator computing device configured to enable a contractor to wirelessly access the control box and to perform at least one of setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the control system.

The control system of claim 9, wherein the user computing device enables the user to create a schedule, wherein the schedule defines the desired temperature for a specific time range for a selected zone of a plurality of zones, wherein the control box is configured to adjust a position of the damper to regulate the flow of forced air inside the air duct of the selected zone based on the schedule.

11. The control system of claim 9, wherein the administrator computing device enables a contractor to associate the damper with a selected zone of a plurality of zones.

12. The control system of claim 1, wherein the scavenger assembly includes a wind turbine configured to convert the flow of forced air in the air duct into electrical current.

13. The control system of claim 1, wherein the predefined rate is at least 600 feet per minute.

14. The control system of claim 1, wherein the damper operates in a third mode using power supplied only by the supplemental power source when air flow is less than a predefined minimum rate.

15. The control system of claim 14, wherein the damper operates in the second mode when air flow is greater than or equal to the predefined minimum rate.

16. The control system of claim 14, wherein the predefined minimum rate is 200 feet per minute.

17. The control system of claim 14, wherein the impeller is configured as an anemometer measuring air flow velocity.

18. The control system of claim 17, wherein the damper module adjusts position of the blade using feedback indicative of air flow velocity provided by the anemometer.

19. The control system of claim 1, wherein the impeller does not boost air flow through the air duct.

20. The control system of claim 19, wherein the impeller does not boost air flow exiting the air duct at any register vent thereof.

21. The control system of claim 1, wherein the rail is secured within a removed portion of the air duct.

22. The control system of claim 1, wherein the supplemental power source is a battery.

23. The control system of claim 22, wherein the battery is rechargeable.

24. The control system of claim 1, wherein the supplemental power source is an external hardwired power source.

25. The control system of claim 1, wherein the damper module is a pneumatic actuator.

26. The control system of claim 1, wherein the damper module is an electric actuator.

27. The control system of claim 1, wherein the scavenger assembly is connected to the rail.

28. The control system of claim 1, wherein the scavenger assembly is separated from the damper assembly and positioned proximate the forced air HVAC system.

29. The control system of claim 1, further comprising a thermistor in communication with the damper assembly and configured to open the blade if communication is lost.

30. The control system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of dampers, each of the plurality of dampers being associated with an additional respective air duct in the predefined zone, wherein the control box is configured to adjust a position of the damper and each of the plurality of dampers to regulate the flow of forced air inside the air duct and the respective air ducts of the predefined zone.

31. The control system of claim 30, wherein the control box communicates with the plurality of dampers in a star topology configuration or a mesh topology configuration.
