1. An electrochromic element comprising:

  • a first substrate having first and second surfaces;

    a second substrate having third and fourth surfaces, the second and third surfaces disposed in a parallel and spaced-apart relationship such to form a gap therebetween;

    a sealing material circumferentially disposed along a perimeter of the third surface to affix the second and third surfaces together to form a chamber therebetween; and

    an electro-chromic medium in the chamber,wherein the second surface comprises a transparent electrode layer,wherein the third surface comprises a reflective electrode layer,wherein the reflective electrode layer comprises a first patterned opening for a glare sensor, the opening comprising a Normalized Percent Full Scale Transmittance (%), of greater than 75% within 20 seconds of a clearing state of the electro-chromic medium in the chamber, andfurther wherein the cleaning state is a shorted state between the electrode layers.
