1. A utility meter for measuring an energy consumption of a utility service provided by a utility distribution system to an electrical load, the utility meter being an assembly of electronics components and the meter being coupleable to the electrical load and the utility distribution system for receiving the provided utility service and for providing utility load service to the electrical load, the utility meter comprising:

  • a utility service input terminal receiving the utility service from the coupled utility distribution system;

    an electrical load output terminal providing utility load service to the coupled electrical load responsive to the received utility service;

    a first board configured to perform communication functions of the utility meter and having an interface for communicating with an electrical load device and a separate interface for communicating over a communication network to a network device that is not an electrical load device, the first board including a first processor and the communication interface connected to the first processor and communicatively configured and coupleable over the communication network to the network device that is not the electrical load device;

    a second board configured to perform metrology functions of the utility meter as a function of the received utility service by the utility service input terminal and the provided utility load service at the electrical load output terminal, the second board including a second processor and an electronic device providing utility meter operations, and the second board providing all electrical power to the electronic device thereon;

    an interface port communicatively connecting the first board and the second board within the electronic assembly of the utility meter;

    a local power supply of the assembly of the utility meter receiving power from an external power source and only providing local utility meter electronics with power including local power to the first board of the utility meter and to the second board of the utility meter, the local power supply of the utility meter assembly being an isolated power supply that is separate and isolated from the utility service provided by the utility distribution system including the utility service that is received at the utility service input terminal of the utility meter and that is provided to the utility load service by the electrical load output terminal of the utility meter through the utility meter to the electrical load for which the energy consumption is measured by the second board of the utility meter and being isolated from the electrical load to which the utility meter is providing utility service,wherein the first processor of the first board is configured todetermine when the communication interface of the first board is currently communicating with the network device over the communication network and to determine a type of the current communication of the communication interface to the network device, the determined type of current communication of the communication interface being selected from the group consisting of power line communication, ZigBee®

    communication, radio communication, optical communication, Bluetooth®

    communication, TCP/IP, wireless TCP/IP, and ModBus®

    ;

    and to provide an indicator signal to the second board via the interface port responsive to the determining of a currently occurring communication that includes an identification of the determined type of the current communication; and

    wherein, responsive to receiving the indicator signal from the first board via the interface port, determining, from the received indicator signal, the current communication type as determined by the first processor, and responsive to the determined current communication type, reducing a power consumption of the electronic device of the second board as provided by the utility meter'"'"'s power to the second board.
