Abstract

A system, device, and method may include a network interface device configured to be communicatively coupled to a user interface. An electronic data storage may be configured to store social network data related to users having accessed a social network content item A processor, coupled to the network interface device and the electronic data storage, may be configured to identify a relationship among at least some of the users, determine a relevance of the relationship to a member of the social network associated with the social network content item based, at least in part, on a social network profile of the member and social network profiles of the users, and cause the network interface device to display, on the user interface, information related to the relationship on the user interface based, at least in part, on the relevance.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when implemented on a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising;

for a predetermined social network content item of an online social networking system, identify a relationship among at least some of a plurality of users who have accessed the predetermined social network content item, the relationship including a plurality of characteristics common among the social network profiles of the at least some of the plurality of users, and the predetermined social network content item associated with a member having a social network profile with the online social networking system, the member not being one of the plurality of users;

weight characteristics of the social network profile of the member and the characteristics of the relationship according to at least one of a significance of the characteristics and a shift in a trend in the characteristics;

determine a relevance score indicating a relevance of the relationship to the member associated with the predetermined social network content item based, at least in part, on a comparison of the characteristics of the social network profile of the member, as weighted, and the plurality of characteristics of the relationship, as weighted; and

cause the network interface device to display, on the user interface, based on the relevance score as determined, a statistic of the relationship of the member to the plurality of users on the user interface, wherein the statistic is at least one of;

a number of the plurality of users having the relationship, a percentage of the plurality of users having the relationship, and a rate of change of the relationship.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the relationship is at least one of a common employer, a common industry, a common occupation, a common location, a common educational institution, a common group, and a common gender.

3. A method, comprising:

for a predetermined social network content item of an online social networking system, identifying, with a processor, a relationship among at least some of a plurality of users who have accessed the social network content item, the relationship including a plurality of characteristics common among the social network profiles of the at least some of the plurality of users, and the predetermined social network content item associated with a member having a social network profile with the online social networking system, the member not being one of the plurality of users;

weighting, with the processor, characteristics of the social network profile of the member and the characteristics of the relationship according to at least one of a significance of the characteristics and a shift in a trend in the characteristics;

determining, with the processor, a relevance score indicating a relevance of the relationship to the member associated with the predetermined social network content item based, at least in part, on a comparison of the characteristics of the social network profile of the member, as weighted, and the plurality of characteristics of the relationship, as weighted; and

causing, with the processor, a network interface device to display information on a user interface, based on the relevance score as determined, a statistic of the relationship of the member to the plurality of users on the user interface, wherein the statistic is at least one of;

a number of the plurality of users having the relationship, a percentage of the plurality of users having the relationship, and a rate of change of the relationship.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the relationship is at least one of a common employer, a common industry, a common occupation, a common location, a common educational institution, a common group, and a common gender.

5. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when implemented on a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

for a predetermined social network content item of an online social networking system, identify a relationship among at least some of a plurality of users who have accessed the predetermined social network content item of an online social networking system, the relationship including a plurality of characteristics common among the social network profiles of the at least some of the plurality of users, and the predetermined social network content item associated with a member having a social network profile with the online social networking system, the member not being one of the plurality of users;

weight characteristics of the social network profile of the member and the characteristics of the relationship according to at least one of a significance of the characteristics and a shift in a trend in the characteristics;

determine a relevance score indicating a relevance of the relationship to the member associated with the predetermined social network content item based, at least in part, on a comparison of the characteristics of the social network profile of the member, as weighted, and the plurality of characteristics of the relationship, as weighted; and

cause the network interface device to display, on the user interface, based on the relevance score as determined, a statistic of the relationship of the member to the plurality of users on the user interface, wherein the statistic is at least one of;

a number of the plurality of users having the relationship, a percentage of the plurality of users having the relationship, and a rate of change of the relationship.

6. The computer readable medium of claim 5, wherein the relationship is at least one of a common employer, a common industry, a common occupation, a common location, a common educational institution, a common group, and a common gender.
