Abstract

According to an example, in a method for displaying visual analytics of entity data, geographic locations of entities may be plotted as first pixel cells on a first region and as second pixel cells on a second region of a geographic map. A determination may be made that the first pixel cells have a higher degree of overlap with each other in the first region compared to the second pixel cells in the second region. The geographic map may be distorted to enlarge the first region and the first pixel cells may be arranged in the first region in a manner that prevents the first pixel cells from overlapping each other. A color value for each of the pixel cells may be determined from a multi-paired color map that represents two variables corresponding to the entities by color and the pixel cells may be caused to be displayed on the distorted geographic map according to the determined respective color values.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to;

plot pixel cells representing a plurality of entities located in different geographic locations on a geographic map, the pixel cells including first pixel cells in a first region of the geographic map and second pixel cells in a second region of the geographic map,

determine whether the first pixel cells in the first region have a higher degree of overlap with each other than the second pixel cells in the second region, and

in response to a determination that the first pixel cells in the first region have a higher degree of overlap with each other than the second pixel cells in the second region, distort the geographic map to enlarge the first region and arrange the first pixel cells in the first region into a non-overlapping arrangement.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pixel cells are located in respective different regions of the geographic map, the respective different regions including the first region and the second region, and

the instructions are further to cause the processor to:

determine densities of the pixel cells in each of the respective different regions, and

distort the geographic map to equalize the densities of the pixel cells in the respective different regions.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the instructions are further to cause the processor to receive user input to alter distortion of the first region or the second region.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the instructions are further to cause the processor to cause display of the first pixel cells and the second pixel cells on the distorted geographic map,

wherein some of the first pixel cells or the second pixel cells are displayed as different shapes, and the different shapes denote that the entities represented by the differently shaped pixel cells have different properties.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the instructions are further to cause the processor to:

determine a color value for each pixel cell of the first pixel cells and the second pixel cells based on a color map, the color value for each pixel cell representing two variables pertaining to an entity represented by the each pixel cell, the two variables including a first variable and a second variable, and

cause display of the first pixel cells and the second pixel cells on the distorted geographic map according to the determined color values.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein to determine the color value, the instructions are to cause the processor to:

define the color map as a two-dimensional coordinate system having;

a first dimension with a minimum and a maximum corresponding respectively to minimum and maximum values from among first variables of the plurality of entities,

a second dimension with a minimum and a maximum corresponding respectively to minimum and maximum values from among second variables of the plurality of entities, and

an origin corresponding to a pairing of a mean of the values of the first variables of the plurality of entities and a mean of the values of the second variables of the plurality of entities,

determine a coordinate on the color map by pairing the values of the two variables represented by the color value,

determine a hue for the color value based on an angle of the coordinate with respect to the origin, and

determine a saturation for the color value based on a length of the coordinate with respect to the origin.

7. A method comprising:

plotting, by a processor of a computing device, pixel cells representing a plurality of entities located in different geographic locations on a geographic map, the pixel cells including first pixel cells in a first region of the geographic map and second pixel cells in a second region of the geographic map;

determining, by the processor, whether the first pixel cells in the first region have a higher degree of overlap with each other than the second pixel cells in the second region; and

in response to a determination that the first pixel cells in the first region have a higher degree of overlap with each other than the second pixel cells in the second region, distorting, by the processor, the geographic map to enlarge the first region and arranging, by the processor, the first pixel cells in the first region into a non-overlapping arrangement.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

determining, by the processor, the pixel cell densities for each of the first and second regions; and

distorting, by the processor, the geographic map to equalize the pixel cell densities of the first and second regions.

9. The method of claim 7, further comprising receiving user input to alter distortion of the geographic map.

10. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

determining, by the processor and based on a color map, a color value for each of the pixel cells representing the plurality of entities, the color value for each pixel cell representing two variables pertaining to an entity represented by the each pixel cell, the two variables including a first variable and a second variable; and

causing, by the processor, display of the pixel cells in the distorted geographic map according to the determined color values.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the determining the color value includes:

defining the color map as a two-dimensional coordinate system having;

a first dimension with a minimum and a maximum corresponding respectively to minimum and maximum values from among first variables of the plurality of entities,

a second dimension with a minimum and a maximum corresponding respectively to minimum and maximum values from among second variables of the plurality of entities, and

an origin corresponding to a mean of the values of the first variables of the plurality of entities and a mean of the values of the second variables of the plurality of entities,

determining a coordinate on the color map by pairing the values of the two variables represented by the color value,

determining a hue of the color value based on an angle of the coordinate with respect to the origin, and

determining a saturation of the color value based on a length of the coordinate with respect to the origin.

12. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor of a computing device, cause the processor of the computing device to:

plot pixel cells representing a plurality of entities located in different geographic locations on a geographic map, the pixel cells including first pixel cells in a first region of the geographic map and second pixel cells in a second region of the geographic map;

determine whether the first pixel cells in the first region have a higher degree of overlap with each other than the second pixel cells in the second region; and

in response to a determination that the first pixel cells in the first region have a higher degree of overlap with each other than the second pixel cells in the second region, distort the geographic map to enlarge the first region and arrange the first pixel cells in the first region into a non-overlapping arrangement.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12, wherein the instructions are further to cause the processor to:

determine the pixel cell densities for each of the first and second regions; and

distort the geographic map to equalize the pixel cell densities in the first and second regions.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12, wherein the instructions are to cause the processor to:

access two variables for each entity of the plurality of entities, the two variables including a first variable and a second variable;

define a color map as a two-dimensional coordinate system having;

a first dimension with a minimum and a maximum corresponding respectively to minimum and maximum values from the first variables of the plurality of entities,

a second dimension with a minimum and a maximum corresponding respectively to minimum and maximum values from the second variables of the plurality of entities, and

an origin corresponding to a mean of the values of the first variables of the plurality of entities and a mean of the values of the second variables of the plurality of entities;

determine a color value for a particular pixel cell representing an entity by;

determination of a coordinate on the color map by pairing values of the two variables corresponding to the entity represented by the particular pixel cell,

determination of a hue of the color value based on an angle of the coordinate with respect to the origin, and

determination of a saturation of the color value based on a length of the coordinate with respect to the origin; and

cause display of the pixel cells representing the plurality of entities on the distorted geographic map according to the color values determined for the pixel cells.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12, wherein the instructions are to cause the processor to:

receive a first input that selects a subset of the pixel cells representing the plurality of entities; and

in response to receipt of the first input, generate a two-dimensional graph that depicts an arrangement of the selected subset of the pixel cells according to two variables for each entity represented by the selected subset of the pixel cells, each axis of the two-dimensional graph corresponding respectively to each of the two variables.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the instructions are to cause the processor to:

receive a second input that selects a further subset of pixel cells from the pixel cells depicted in the two-dimensional graph; and

in response to receipt of the second input, generate a second geographic map that depicts the further subset of pixel cells according to respective geographic locations of entities corresponding to the further subset of pixel cells.
