1. A method for configuring a controlling device having an activity mode corresponding to a controllable activity in which activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys of the controlling device causes a transmission of command data to control one or more functional operations of an intended target appliance, the method comprising:

  • storing in a memory of the controlling device a plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings for the controllable activity;

    receiving, via one or more activations of predetermined keys of the controlling device, input to designate a plurality of appliances in an intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment;

    using by the controlling device the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment to select one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings; and

    causing the controlling device to use an appliance command data set appropriate for use in controlling functional operations of a selected one of the plurality of designated appliances when the controlling device is caused to transmit command data in response to an activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys when the controlling device is placed into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity wherein the one of the plurality of designated appliances is selected as a function of the selected one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings.
