Abstract

A process controls presentation of digital resources. Different resources or viewing components associated with viewing areas may be assigned different visual designators that affect how the digital resources are processed and presented. A user interface enables automatic generation of an array of resources that causes resources to be displayed in a particular predefined way based on their visual designators.

Claims

1. A method for generating a visual array of digital resources, the visual array specifying a layout of the digital resources on a display, wherein each of the digital resources comprises digital content displayable on the display, the method executing on a client device in a networked computer environment, the method comprising:

storing, by a memory of the client device, a data structure including;

first pane configuration parameters defining a first viewing area of the display associated with a first visual designator;

second pane configuration parameters defining a second viewing area of the display associated with a second visual designator;

a first ordered set of identifiers for first digital resources each tagged with the first visual designator, the first ordered set of identifiers including at least a first identifier for a first web page;

a second ordered set of identifiers for second digital resources each tagged with the second visual designator, the second ordered set of identifiers including at least a second identifier for a second web page;

a resource mapping data structure mapping the first identifier for the first web page to the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources to indicate that the second digital resources are each contextually related to the first web page;

detecting navigation of a web browser to the first web page having the first identifier;

responsive to detecting the navigation of the web browser to the first web page;

detecting, based on the data structure, that the first identifier for the first web page is tagged with the first visual designator;

responsive to detecting that the first identifier for the first web is tagged with the first visual designator, rendering the first web page to fit in the first viewing area of the display defined by the first pane configuration parameters associated with the first viewing area;

automatically identifying, based on the resource mapping data structure, the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources that are contextually related to the first web page;

providing the second identifier of the second web page to the web browser to cause the web browser to load the second web page;

detecting, based on the data structure, that the second identifier for the second web page is tagged with the second visual designator;

responsive to detecting that the second identifier for the second web page is tagged with the second visual designator, rendering the second web page to fit in the second viewing area of the display defined by the second pane configuration parameters associated with the second viewing area;

rendering a user interface element that includes a first navigation element to enable navigation between the first digital resources in the first viewing area of the display according to ordering of the first ordered set of identifiers, and a second navigation element to enable navigation between the second digital resources in the second viewing area of the display according to ordering of the second ordered set of identifiers.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first web page is hosted at first origin domain and wherein the second web page is hosted at a second origin domain unique from the first origin domain.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, by the client device, an instruction to share the visual array;

sending, by the client device, the data structure to a remote server for accessing by another client device in the networked computer environment.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser window; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser window.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser tab; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser tab.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser pane within a same browser window as the first web page; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser pane.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

loading the second web page in an existing web browser window, tab, or pane.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instruction for generating a visual array of digital resources, the visual array specifying a layout of the digital resources on a display, wherein each of the digital resources comprises digital content displayable on the display, the instructions when executed by a processor causing the processor to perform steps including:

storing a data structure including;

first pane configuration parameters defining a first viewing area of the display associated with a first visual designator;

second pane configuration parameters defining a second viewing area of the display associated with a second visual designator;

a first ordered set of identifiers for first digital resources each tagged with the first visual designator, the first ordered set of identifiers including at least a first identifier for a first web page;

a second ordered set of identifiers for second digital resources each tagged with the second visual designator, the second ordered set of identifiers including at least a second identifier for a second web page;

a resource mapping data structure mapping the first identifier for the first web page to the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources to indicate that the second digital resources are each contextually related to the first web page;

a resource mapping data structure mapping the first identifier for the first web page to the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources to indicate that the second digital resources are each contextually related to the first web page;

detecting navigation of a web browser to the first web page having the first identifier;

responsive to detecting the navigation of the web browser to the first web page;

detecting, based on the data structure, that the first identifier for the first web page is tagged with the first visual designator;

responsive to detecting that the first identifier for the first web in the data structure is tagged with the first visual designator, rendering the first web in the data structure to fit in the first viewing area of the display defined by the first pane configuration parameters associated with the first viewing area;

automatically identifying, based on the resource mapping data structure, the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources that are contextually related to the first web page;

providing the second identifier of the second web page to the web browser to cause the web browser to load the second web page;

detecting, based on the data structure, that the second identifier for the second web page is tagged with the second visual designator;

responsive to detecting that the second identifier for the second web page is tagged with the second visual designator, rendering the second web page to fit in the second viewing area of the display defined by the second pane configuration parameters associated with the second viewing area;

rendering a user interface element that includes a first navigation element to enable navigation between the first digital resources in the first viewing area of the display according to ordering of the first ordered set of identifiers, and a second navigation element to enable navigation between the second digital resources in the second viewing area of the display according to ordering of the second ordered set of identifiers.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8, further comprising:

receiving, by the client device, an instruction to share the visual array;

sending, by the client device, the data structure to a remote server for accessing by another client device in the networked computer environment.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser window; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser window.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser tab; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser tab.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser pane within a same browser window as the first web page; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser pane.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

loading the second web page in an existing web browser window, tab, or pane.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the first web page is hosted by at first origin domain and wherein the second web page is hosted at a second origin domain unique from the first origin domain.

15. A computer system comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instruction for generating a visual array of digital resources, the visual array specifying a layout of the digital resources on a display, wherein each of the digital resources comprises digital content displayable on the display, the instructions when executed by the processor causing the processor to perform steps including;

storing a data structure including;

first pane configuration parameters defining a first viewing area of the display associated with a first visual designator;

second pane configuration parameters defining a second viewing area of the display associated with a second visual designator;

a first ordered set of identifiers for first digital resources each tagged with the first visual designator, the first ordered set of identifiers including at least a first identifier for a first web page;

a second ordered set of identifiers for second digital resources each tagged with the second visual designator, the second ordered set of identifiers including at least a second identifier for a second web page;

a resource mapping data structure mapping the first identifier for the first web page to the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources to indicate that the second digital resources are each contextually related to the first web page;

a resource mapping data structure mapping the first identifier for the first web page to the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources to indicate that the second digital resources are each contextually related to the first web page;

detecting navigation of a web browser to the first web page having the first identifier;

responsive to detecting the navigation of the web browser to the first web page;

detecting, based on the data structure, that the first identifier for the first web page is tagged with the first visual designator;

responsive to detecting that the first identifier for the first web in the data structure is tagged with the first visual designator, rendering the first web in the data structure to fit in the first viewing area of the display defined by the first pane configuration parameters associated with the first viewing area;

automatically identifying, based on the resource mapping data structure, the second ordered set of identifiers for the second digital resources that are contextually related to the first web page;

providing the second identifier of the second web page to the web browser to cause the web browser to load the second web page;

detecting, based on the data structure, that the second identifier for the second web page is tagged with the second visual designator;

responsive to detecting that the second identifier for the second web page is tagged with the second visual designator, rendering the second web page to fit in the second viewing area of the display defined by the second pane configuration parameters associated with the second viewing area;

rendering a user interface element that includes a first navigation element to enable navigation between the first digital resources in the first viewing area of the display according to ordering of the first ordered set of identifiers, and a second navigation element to enable navigation between the second digital resources in the second viewing area of the display according to ordering of the second ordered set of identifiers.

16. The computer system of claim 15, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser window; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser window.

17. The computer system of claim 15, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser tab; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser tab.

18. The computer system of claim 15, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

instantiating a new web browser pane within a same browser window as the first web page; and

loading the second web page in the new web browser pane.

19. The computer system of claim 15, wherein causing the web browser to load the second web page comprises:

loading the second web page in an existing web browser window, tab, or pane.

20. The computer system of claim 15, further comprising:

receiving, by the client device, an instruction to share the visual array;

sending, by the client device, the data structure to a remote server for accessing by another client device in the networked computer environment.
