Abstract

In accordance with one or more embodiments, a communication device includes a dielectric antenna having a longitudinal axis, a feed point and an aperture. A cable comprising a core is coupled to the feed point of the dielectric antenna. A transmitter, coupled to the cable, facilitates a transmission of first electromagnetic waves to the feed point of the dielectric antenna, the first electromagnetic waves guided by the core. The first electromagnetic waves propagate along the core without requiring an electrical return path, and the first electromagnetic waves generate free-space wireless signals from the aperture of the antenna in accordance with a hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern.

Claims

1. A communication device, comprising:

a dielectric antenna having a longitudinal axis, a feed point and an aperture;

a cable comprising a core coupled to the feed point of the dielectric antenna; and

a transmitter, coupled to the cable, the transmitter facilitating a transmission of first electromagnetic waves to the feed point of the dielectric antenna, the first electromagnetic waves guided by the core, the first electromagnetic waves propagating along the core without requiring an electrical return path, and the first electromagnetic waves generate free-space wireless signals from the aperture of the dielectric antenna in accordance with a hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern.

2. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern has a null in a direction corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the dielectric antenna.

3. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the dielectric antenna is symmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the dielectric antenna.

The communication device of claim 1, wherein the hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern has a relatively low field strength in a direction corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the dielectric antenna compared with directions that deviate from the direction corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the dielectric antenna.

5. The communication device of claim 1, wherein dielectric antenna is conductorless.

6. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the first electromagnetic waves propagate along the core via a fundamental wave mode.

7. The communication device of claim 6, wherein the fundamental wave mode is a transverse magnetic wave mode.

8. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the first electromagnetic waves propagate along the core via a circularly symmetrical wave mode.

9. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the transmitter generates electromagnetic signals that convey data at non-optical frequencies and wherein the communication device further comprises a coupler configured to receive the electromagnetic signals and further to launch the first electromagnetic waves on the core.

10. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the core supports propagation of the first electromagnetic waves via a fundamental transverse magnetic wave mode.

11. The communication device of claim 1, further comprising:

a coupler configured to receive second electromagnetic waves from the core, wherein the second electromagnetic waves are launched on the core in response to wireless signals received at the aperture of the dielectric antenna; and

a receiver configured to receive electromagnetic signals that convey data at non-optical frequencies in response to the second electromagnetic waves.

12. An antenna structure, comprising:

a solid dielectric antenna having a longitudinal axis, a feed point and an aperture; and

a cable comprising a core coupled to the feed point of the solid dielectric antenna;

wherein the core facilitates a propagation of electromagnetic waves to the feed point of the solid dielectric antenna without requiring an electrical return path, the electromagnetic waves guided by the core, and wherein the electromagnetic waves generate a hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern from the aperture of the solid dielectric antenna.

13. The antenna structure of claim 12, wherein the solid dielectric antenna is symmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the solid dielectric antenna and generates a far-field beam pattern that is asymmetrical about the longitudinal axis.

14. The antenna structure of claim 12, wherein the hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern has a null in a direction corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the solid dielectric antenna.

15. The antenna structure of claim 12, wherein the hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern has a relatively low field strength in a direction corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the solid dielectric antenna compared with directions that deviate from the direction corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the solid dielectric antenna.

16. The antenna structure of claim 12, wherein solid dielectric antenna is conductorless.

17. The antenna structure of claim 12, wherein the electromagnetic waves propagate along the core via a fundamental wave mode.

18. The antenna structure of claim 17, wherein the fundamental wave mode is a transverse magnetic wave mode.

19. The antenna structure of claim 12, wherein the electromagnetic waves propagate along the core via a circularly symmetrical wave mode.

20. An antenna structure, comprising:

conductorless antenna means for transmitting free space wireless signals, the conductorless antenna means having a feed point and an aperture; and

cable means coupled to the feed point of the conductorless antenna means, for facilitating a propagation of electromagnetic waves to the feed point of the conductorless antenna means without requiring an electrical return path, the electromagnetic waves guided by the cable means, and wherein the electromagnetic waves generate the free space wireless signals with a hollow-boresight antenna beam pattern from the aperture of the conductorless antenna means.
