Abstract

A sports ball comprising a cover having an outer substrate surface is provided. The cover may include plurality of panels, wherein each panel has a respective panel surface. The panel surfaces of the respective panels collectively comprise the outer substrate surface of the cover. A surface texture is disposed upon and additively applied to the outer substrate surface. The surface texture is disposed on the respective panel surfaces in customizable, panel-specific, predefined panel arrangements. The surface texture defines surface profile that includes an alternating and repeating series of land areas and raised portions, wherein each raised portion is positioned between a plurality of land areas. The raised portions extend from the outer substrate surface and are formed from a dimensional ink, wherein each of the plurality of raised portions has a terminus that is spaced apart from the outer substrate a height of greater than about 0.05 millimeters (mm).

Claims

1. A sports ball comprising:

a cover having an outer substrate surface; and

a surface texture disposed upon the outer substrate surface, wherein the surface texture comprises a dimensional ink and defines a surface profile that includes;

a plurality of raised portions that extend from the outer substrate surface, wherein each of the plurality of raised portions has a terminus that is spaced apart from the outer substrate surface by a height that is greater than about 0.05 millimeters (mm), and wherein each raised portion is composed of a plurality of layers of the dimensional ink from the outer substrate surface to the terminus, along an entirety of the height of each raised portion; and

a plurality of land areas that are flush with the outer substrate surface and disposed between each of the plurality of raised portions.

2. The sports ball of claim 1 wherein the surface texture is disposed upon a majority of the outer substrate surface.

3. The sports ball of claim 1 wherein the surface profile includes alternating and repeating series of the land areas and the raised portions, wherein each raised portion is positioned between a plurality of land areas.

The sports ball of claim 1 wherein the cover comprises of a plurality of panels coupled via at least one seam, and wherein each panel has a respective panel surface that defines a portion of the outer substrate surface, such that the surface texture is disposed on each panel surface in a predefined panel arrangement.

5. The sports ball of claim 4 wherein the predefined panel arrangement covers a majority of the respective panel surface of each panel.

The sports ball of claim 4 wherein the plurality of panels includes a first panel and a second panel, and wherein the surface texture is arranged in a first panel arrangement on the panel surface of the first panel and the surface texture is arranged in a second panel arrangement on the panel surface of the second panel, wherein the second panel arrangement is different than the first panel arrangement.

The sports ball of claim 6 wherein the plurality of panels includes a first panel and a second panel, and wherein the surface texture disposed on the first panel in the first panel arrangement has a first surface profile and the surface texture disposed on the second panel in the second panel arrangement has a second surface profile, wherein the first surface profile is different than the second surface profile.

8. The sports ball of claim 4 wherein the predefined panel arrangements of each of the plurality of panels collectively form a topographical design across the outer substrate surface of the cover.

9. The sports ball of claim 8 wherein the topographical design includes a series of concentric shapes.

10. The sports ball of claim 1, wherein the plurality of layers include:

a first layer;

a second layer being positioned between the outer substrate surface and the first layer;

wherein the first layer is composed of dimensional ink of a second color and the second layer is composed of a dimensional ink of a first color; and

wherein the first color is different than the second color.

11. The sports ball of claim 1 wherein the height is from about 0.07 millimeters (mm) to about 0.15 millimeters (mm).

12. The sports ball of claim 11 wherein the height is about 0.11 millimeters (mm).

13. A method of manufacturing a sports ball comprising:

providing a cover having an outer substrate surface, wherein the cover comprises a plurality of panels, and wherein each panel has a respective panel surface that defines a portion of the outer substrate surface;

selecting a predefined panel arrangement;

additively applying a plurality of layers of dimensional ink in the predefined panel arrangement to the panel surface of at least one of the plurality of panels via an additive manufacturing process, such that the dimensional ink forms a surface texture disposed on the panel surface of the respective panel in the selected predefined panel arrangement; and

wherein the surface texture disposed on the respective panel surface defines a surface profile that includes;

a plurality of raised portions that extend from the respective panel surface, wherein each of the raised portions is composed of the plurality of layers of dimensional ink, wherein each of the raise portions has a terminus that is spaced apart from the respective panel surface by a height that is greater than about 0.05 millimeters (mm), and wherein the plurality of layers of dimensional ink includes;

a first layer composed of dimensional ink of a second color;

a second layer being positioned between the respective panel surface and the first layer, wherein the second layer is composed of a dimensional ink of a first color; and

wherein the first color is different than the second color; and

a plurality of land areas that are flush with the respective panel surface and disposed between each of the plurality of raised portions.

14. The method of claim 13 further including:

applying a base ink to the respective panel surface, such that the base ink is disposed between the respective panel surface and the second layer of dimensional ink.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein additively applying the plurality of layers of dimensional ink to the panel surface of at least one of the plurality of panels via an additive manufacturing process further includes:

positioning a screen over the respective panel, such that the panel surface of the respective panel faces the screen, the screen having a substrate side positioned adjacent to the panel surface and an open side positioned opposite the substrate side, and wherein the screen and the panel surface define an inkwell within the screen and upon the panel surface in the form of the predefined panel arrangement;

flooding the inkwell with a first application of the dimensional ink of a first color, to form the second layer of dimensional ink;

traversing the open side of the screen with an immersion tool to compress and distribute the first application of the dimensional ink through the screen and on to the panel surface;

initiating an intermediate curing process for the first application of the dimensional ink;

flooding the inkwell with a subsequent application of the dimensional ink of a second color to form the first layer of dimensional ink, wherein the second layer of dimensional ink is disposed between the panel surface and the first layer of dimensional ink, and wherein the first color is different than the second color;

traversing the open side of the screen with an immersion tool to compress and distribute the subsequent application of dimensional ink through the screen; and

initiating the intermediate curing process for the subsequent application of the dimensional ink.

The method of claim 15 wherein the steps of flooding the inkwell with a subsequent application of the dimensional ink, traversing the open side of the screen with an immersion tool to compress and distribute the subsequent application of dimensional ink through the screen, and initiating the intermediate drying process for the subsequent application of the dimensional ink are repeated until the height is from about 0.07 millimeters (mm) to about 0.15 millimeters (mm).

17. The method of claim 15 further including the steps of:

removing the screen from the panel surface;

applying an exterior coating to an exterior surface of the sports ball including the panel surface of each panel of the plurality of panels and the surface texture defined by the dimensional ink; and

initiating a final curing process for the exterior coating.

18. The method of claim 13 wherein the plurality of panels includes a first panel and a second panel, wherein:

the dimensional ink is additively applied to the panel surface of the first panel in a first predefined panel arrangement having a first surface profile;

the dimensional ink is additively applied to the panel surface of the second panel in a second predefined panel arrangement having a second surface profile;

wherein the second predefined panel arrangement is different than the first predefined panel arrangement; and

wherein the second surface profile is different than the first surface profile.

19. A sports ball comprising:

a cover having an outer substrate surface; and

a surface texture disposed upon the outer substrate surface, wherein the surface texture comprises a dimensional ink and defines a surface profile that includes;

a plurality of raised portions that extend from the outer substrate surface, wherein each of the raised portions is composed of a plurality of layers of dimensional ink, wherein each of the plurality of raised portions has a terminus that is spaced apart from the outer substrate surface by a height that is greater than about 0.05 millimeters (mm), and wherein the plurality of layers of dimensional ink includes;

a first layer composed of dimensional ink of a second color;

a second layer being positioned between the outer substrate surface and the first layer, wherein the second layer is composed of a dimensional ink of a first color; and

wherein the first color is different than the second color; and

a plurality of land areas that are flush with the outer substrate surface and disposed between each of the plurality of raised portions.

20. The sports ball of claim 19 wherein the surface texture is disposed upon a majority of the outer substrate surface.

21. The sports ball of claim 19 wherein the surface profile includes alternating and repeating series of the land areas and the raised portions, wherein each raised portion is positioned between a plurality of land areas.

22. The sports ball of claim 19 wherein the cover comprises of a plurality of panels coupled via at least one seam, and wherein each panel has a respective panel surface that defines a portion of the outer substrate surface, such that the surface texture is disposed on each panel surface in a predefined panel arrangement.

23. The sports ball of claim 22 wherein the predefined panel arrangement covers a majority of the respective panel surface of each panel.

24. The sports ball of claim 22 wherein:

the plurality of panels includes a first panel and a second panel;

the surface texture is arranged on the panel surface of the first panel in a first predefined panel arrangement having a first surface profile;

the surface texture is arranged on the panel surface of the second panel in a second predefined panel arrangement having a second surface profile;

wherein the second predefined panel arrangement is different than the first predefined panel arrangement; and

wherein the first surface profile is different than the second surface profile.

25. The sports ball of claim 22 wherein the predefined panel arrangements of each of the plurality of panels collectively form a topographical design across the outer substrate surface of the cover.

26. The sports ball of claim 25 wherein the topographical design includes a series of concentric shapes.
