Abstract

Methods for controlling vacuum within a brake booster by modifying powertrain operation include determining an intake manifold vacuum in response to actuation of a brake pedal. Increasing the intake manifold vacuum if the brake booster vacuum is less than a desired brake booster vacuum. In some embodiments, the transmission is downshifted to increase engine speed and intake manifold vacuum.

Claims

1. A method for controlling brake vacuum within a brake booster on a vehicle that includes an engine and a transmission, comprising:

determining an intake manifold vacuum in response to actuation of a brake pedal;

downshifting the transmission to increase engine speed and intake manifold vacuum in response to the intake manifold vacuum being less than a desired brake booster vacuum; and

reducing torque of the engine to maintain a constant power output of the engine.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the transmission is a continuously variable transmission.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the vehicle includes an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and wherein the method further comprises disabling the EGR to increase intake manifold vacuum in response to the intake manifold vacuum being less than the desired brake booster vacuum.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the engine includes variable cam timing and wherein the method further comprises adjusting cam timing to increase intake manifold vacuum in response to the intake manifold vacuum being less than the desired brake booster vacuum.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the engine is configured for start-stop operation, and wherein the method further comprises:

stopping the engine when torque is not being requested; and

in response to actuation of the brake pedal, restarting the engine to increase intake manifold vacuum when the intake manifold vacuum is less than the desired brake booster vacuum.

6. A system for controlling brake vacuum comprising:

an engine including an intake manifold;

a transmission coupled to the engine;

a brake system including a brake booster in fluid communication with the engine and a brake pedal; and

a controller programmed to;

determine vacuum in the intake manifold in response to actuation of the brake pedal,

downshift the transmission to increase a speed of the engine and to increase the vacuum in the intake manifold in response to the vacuum of the intake manifold being less than a desired brake booster vacuum, and

reduce torque of the engine to maintain a constant power output of the engine.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the transmission is a continuously variable transmission.

8. The system of claim 6 further comprising an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, and wherein the system is further programmed to, in response to the vacuum in the intake manifold being less than the desired brake booster vacuum, disable the EGR to increase the vacuum in the intake manifold.

The system of claim 6 wherein the engine further includes variable cam timing and wherein the controller is further programmed to adjust cam timing of the engine to increase the vacuum in intake manifold in response to the vacuum in the intake manifold being less than the desired brake booster vacuum.

The system of claim 6 wherein the engine is configured for start-stop operation, and wherein the controller is further programmed to stop the engine when torque is not requested by the driver, and in response to actuation of the brake pedal, restart the engine to increase the vacuum in the intake manifold when the vacuum in the intake manifold is less than the desired brake booster vacuum.
