Abstract

A thermostat that is configured to be releasably secured to a wall mountable connector, wherein the wall mountable connector includes a jumper switch that permits an installer or other professional to easily form an electrical connection between different wiring terminals of the wall mountable connector in accordance with how particular field wires are connected to the wiring terminals of the wall mountable connector. The thermostat is further configured to automatically determine the position of the jumper switch of the wall mountable connector, and in some cases, change the control of at least some functionality of the thermostat and/or HVAC equipment depending on the position of the jumper switch.

Claims

1. A thermostat configured to be releasably secured to a wall mountable connector, wherein the wall mountable connector is configured to be secured to a wall and to provide electrical connections between the thermostat and HVAC equipment that is to be controlled by the thermostat, the wall mountable connector including two wire terminals and a jumper switch, the jumper switch including a conductive member spanning the two wire terminals and a moveable switch member that is moveable, relative to the conductive member, between a first position in which the moveable switch member prevents the conductive member from electrically coupling the two wire terminals and a second position in which the moveable switch member permits the conductive member to electrically couple the two wire terminals, the thermostat comprising:

a housing including a rear surface facing the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector;

a controller disposed within the housing, the controller operatively coupled to a plurality of terminals that are electrically coupled to corresponding terminals of the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector; and

a jumper switch position detector configured to detect the physical position of the movable switch member and inform the controller whether the moveable switch member is in the first position or in the second position when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector,

wherein the controller is configured to change the control of at least some functionality of the thermostat and/or HVAC equipment in accordance with whether the moveable switch member of the jumper switch is physically in the first position or in the second position.

2. The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the rear surface facing of the housing includes a rear-facing recess that is configured to receive at least part of the wall mountable connector.

The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the two wire terminals of the wall mountable connector are an R wire receiving terminal and an R_C wire receiving terminal, and wherein the conductive member does not electrically connect the R and R_C wire receiving terminals when the moveable switch member is in the first position and the conductive member electrically connects the R and R_C wire receiving terminals when the moveable switch member is in the second position.

The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the jumper switch position detector comprises a plunger that is aligned with a corresponding aperture in the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector, wherein the jumper switch is configured to physically block the corresponding aperture in the wall mountable connector from accepting the plunger when the moveable switch member is in one of the first position and the second position, and is configured to allow the corresponding aperture of the wall mountable connector to accept the plunger when the moveable switch member is in the other of the first position and the second position.

The thermostat of claim 4, wherein the jumper switch position detector further comprises a switch that is operatively coupled to the controller and is configured to detect whether or not the plunger is allowed to extend into the corresponding aperture of the wall mountable connector, thereby informing the controller whether the moveable switch member of the wall mountable connector is in the first position or the second position.

6. The thermostat of claim 5, wherein:

the jumper switch position detector further comprises a spring that biases the plunger toward an extended position, wherein the plunger is biased to extend into the corresponding aperture of the wall mountable connector when the moveable switch member does not physically block the corresponding aperture in the wall mountable connector, and the bias of the spring is overcome and the plunger is depressed when the moveable switch member is physically blocking the corresponding aperture of the wall mountable connector; and

the switch comprises an optical interrupter in which a light beam is interrupted or not depending on whether the plunger extends into the corresponding aperture of the wall mountable connector or not.

The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the jumper switch position detector comprises a photo detector, wherein the photo detector is configured to see a first element when the moveable switch member is in the first position and see a second element when the moveable switch member is in the second position.

The thermostat of claim 7, wherein the first element is on the moveable switch member and the second element is on the wall mountable connector, and wherein the second element is blocked from view of the photo detector by the moveable switch member when the moveable switch member is in the first position and is not blocked from view of the photo detector by the moveable switch member when the moveable switch member is in the second position.

9. The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the jumper switch position detector comprises:

a first photo detector positioned to view a first portion of the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector; and

a second photo detector positioned to view a second portion of the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector.

10. The thermostat of claim 9, wherein:

when the moveable switch member is in the first position, the first photo detector is configured to see the moveable switch member and the second photo detector is configured to see a first pattern disposed on the second portion of the wall mountable connector; and

when the moveable switch member is in the second position, the first photo detector is configured to see a second pattern disposed on the first portion of the wall mountable connector and the second photo detector is configured to see the wall mountable switch member.

A thermostat configured to be releasably secured to a wall mountable connector, wherein the wall mountable connector is configured to be secured to a wall and to provide electrical connections between the thermostat and HVAC equipment that is to be controlled by the thermostat, the wall mountable connector including a plurality of wire receiving terminals including an R wire receiving terminal and an R_C wire receiving terminal, the wall mountable connector further including a jumper switch, the jumper switch including a conductive member spanning the R and R_C wire receiving terminals and a moveable switch member that prevents the conductive member from electrically connecting the R and R_C wire receiving terminals when the moveable switch member is in a first position relative to the conductive member and allows the conductive member to electrically connect the R and R_C wire receiving terminals when the moveable switch member is in a second position relative to the conductive member, the thermostat comprising:

a housing including a rear surface facing the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector;

a controller disposed within the housing, the controller operatively coupled to a plurality of terminals that are electrically coupled to corresponding terminals of the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector; and

a jumper switch position detector configured to inform the controller whether the moveable switch member is in the first position or in the second position when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector, wherein the jumper switch position detector comprises a plunger that is aligned with a corresponding aperture in the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector, wherein the moveable switch member is configured to block the corresponding aperture in the wall mountable connector from accepting the plunger when the jumper switch is in one of the first position and the second position, and is configured to allow the corresponding aperture of the wall mountable connector to accept the plunger when the jumper switch is in the other of the first position and the second position,

wherein the controller is configured to change the control of at least some functionality of the thermostat and/or HVAC equipment in accordance with whether the jumper switch is in the first position or in the second position.

The thermostat of claim 11, wherein the jumper switch position detector further comprises a switch that is operatively coupled to the controller and is configured to detect whether or not the plunger is allowed to extend into the corresponding aperture of the wall mountable connector or not, thereby informing the controller whether the moveable switch member of the wall mountable connector is in the first position or the second position.

13. The thermostat of claim 12, further comprising a spring that biases the plunger to an extended position.

14. The thermostat of claim 12, wherein the switch comprises an optical interrupter in which a light beam is interrupted or not depending on whether the plunger is in the extended position or not.

A thermostat configured to be releasably secured to a wall mountable connector, wherein the wall mountable connector is configured to be secured to a wall and to provide electrical connections between the thermostat and HVAC equipment that is to be controlled by the thermostat, the wall mountable connector including a plurality of wire receiving terminals including an R wire receiving terminal and an R_C wire receiving terminal, the wall mountable connector further including a jumper switch, the jumper switch including a conductive member spanning the R and R_C wire receiving terminals and a moveable switch member that is moveable relative to the conductive member and that prevents the conductive member from electrically connecting the R and R_C wire receiving terminals when the moveable switch member is in a first position and allows the conductive member to electrically connect the R and R_C wire receiving terminals when the moveable switch member is in a second position, the thermostat comprising:

a housing including a rear surface facing the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector;

a controller disposed within the housing, the controller operatively coupled to a plurality of terminals that are electrically coupled to corresponding terminals of the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector; and

a jumper switch position detector operatively coupled to the controller, the jumper switch position detector including one or more optical detectors configured to detect whether the moveable switch member is in the first position or in the second position when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector,

wherein the controller is configured to change the control of at least some functionality of the thermostat and/or HVAC equipment in accordance with whether the moveable switch member is in the first position or in the second position.

16. The thermostat of claim 15, wherein the one or more optical detectors comprises a photo detector that sees a first element when the moveable switch member is in the first position and sees a second element when the moveable switch member is in the second position.

The thermostat of claim 16, wherein the first element is on the moveable switch member and the second element is on the wall mountable connector, and wherein the second element is blocked from view of the photo detector by the moveable switch member when the jumper switch is in the first position and is not blocked from view of the photo detector by the moveable switch member when the moveable switch member is in the second position.

18. The thermostat of claim 16, wherein the first element comprises a first pattern, and the second element comprises a second pattern.

19. The thermostat of claim 15, wherein the one or more optical detectors comprises:

a first photo detector positioned to view a first portion of the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector; and

a second photo detector positioned to view a second portion of the wall mountable connector when the thermostat is secured to the wall mountable connector.

The thermostat of claim 19, wherein the first photo detector is configured to see the moveable switch member and the second photo detector is configured to see a first pattern disposed on the second portion of the wall mountable connector when the moveable switch member is in the first position, and the first photo detector is configured to see a second pattern disposed on the first portion of the wall mountable connector and the second photo detector is configured to see the moveable switch member when the moveable switch member is in the second position.
