1. A method of improving a determination an optical probe is not properly positioned with respect to a measurement site on a patient by creating greater separation between valid parameter data specifically associated with probe on conditions and invalid parameter data specifically associated with probe off conditions, and by storing representations of multi-dimensional shapes of said valid and invalid parameter data to be accessible to a processing system to validate or invalidate parameter measurements using said shapes, the method comprising:

  • activating a noninvasive oximeter sensor, said activating consistent with activations when said sensor is properly applied to said measurement site of said patient for monitoring one or more physiological conditions, however, said noninvasive oximeter sensor being placed in predetermined probe off conditions;

    receiving probe off data responsive to signals detected by said noninvasive oximeter sensor;

    defining a probe off space from analysis of said probe off data, said probe off space being multi-dimensional;

    defining a probe on space representing valid parameter data, said probe on space being multi-dimensional;

    when said probe off space is not operably separate from said probe on space, increasing said multi-dimensions to increase separation between said probe off space and said probe on space; and

    storing said probe off and said probe on space in memory, said memory operably accessible by a patient monitor.
