Method and system for vehicle ESC system using map data
First Claim
1. A method comprising:
- determining, by a processor, a location and direction of travel of a vehicle along a road in a road network;
determining, by the processor, a property of the road ahead of the location of the vehicle which will one of assist or counter the operation thereof;
obtaining, by the processor, an output from at least one sensor configured to sense at least one aspect of operation of the vehicle and generate a signal indicative thereof;
determining, by the processor based on the output from the at least one sensor, how the vehicle is actually being operated;
determining, by the processor, whether actual operation of the vehicle is consistent with the property of the road ahead of the location of the vehicle to assist or counter the operation thereof, wherein the operation of the vehicle is determined to be intended when the actual operation of the vehicle is consistent with the property of the road ahead of the location of the vehicle to assist or counter the operation thereof; and
exerting control, by the processor, over the operation of the vehicle in accordance with the determination whether actual operation of the vehicle is consistent with the property of the road ahead of the location of the vehicle to assist or counter the operation thereof.

Abstract
An Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system for a vehicle is disclosed. An electronic control unit (ECU) is programmed to reduce vehicle lateral skidding by reducing differences between an intended vehicle direction and/or yaw rate and an actual vehicle direction and/or yaw rate by applying modifications to operation of the vehicle brakes and/or throttle. The ESC system receives inputs from wheel speed sensors, a steering wheel position sensor, a yaw rate sensor and a lateral acceleration sensor. The ESC system also receives input that indicates at least a property of the road upon which the vehicle is located, wherein the road upon which the vehicle is located is determined from a positioning system that uses a map database and the property is determined from the map database. The ESC system incorporates the road property information in determining when and/or how to modify operation of the vehicle to reduce vehicle skidding.

24. A system, comprising:

means for sensing an aspect of operation of a vehicle and generating a signal indicative thereof; means for receiving information indicating the position and direction of travel of the vehicle on a road and a property of the road upon which the vehicle is located that is ahead of the position of the vehicle which will one of assist or counter the operation thereof; means for determining, coupled with the means for sensing, how the vehicle is actually being operated based on the signal indicative of the aspect of operation of the vehicle; and means for determining whether actual operation of the vehicle is consistent with the property of the road upon which the vehicle is located that is ahead of the position of the vehicle to assist or counter the operation thereof, wherein the operation of the vehicle is determined to be intended when the actual operation of the vehicle is consistent with the property of the road upon which the vehicle is located that is ahead of the position of the vehicle to assist or counter the operation thereof; and means for exerting control over the operation of the vehicle in accordance with the determination whether actual operation of the vehicle is consistent with the property of the road ahead of the location of the vehicle to assist or counter the operation thereof. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26, 27, 28, 29)
