Abstract

There is provided mechanisms for adaptive beamforming scanning. A method is performed by a network device having a non-uniform directional network coverage. The method comprises obtaining a beam pattern indicating spatial directions in which reception of identification signals is to be scanned, wherein the beam pattern is defined by the non-uniform directional network coverage. The method comprises scanning with directional beams in the spatial directions according to the beam pattern for reception of the identification signals from wireless devices.

Claims

1. A method for adaptive beamforming scanning, the method being performed by a network device having a non-uniform directional network coverage, the method comprising:

obtaining a beam pattern indicating spatial directions in which reception of identification signals is to be scanned, wherein the beam pattern is defined by the non-uniform directional network coverage; and

scanning with directional beams in the spatial directions according to the beam pattern for reception of the identification signals from wireless devices.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the directional beams have beam width values taken from a non-uniform set determined according to the beam pattern.

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein none of the beam width values are smaller than a pre-configured first threshold value.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the directional beams take time duration values for the scanning from a non-uniform set determined according to the beam pattern.

5. The method according to claim 4, wherein none of the time duration values are smaller than a pre-configured second threshold value.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein a total time duration for scanning through all directional beams is time-varying and determined according to the beam pattern.

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the non-uniform spatial network coverage identifies at least two network coverage regions having mutually different network coverage levels.

The method according to claim 1, wherein the beam pattern is defined such that a directional beam pointing in a direction of a first network coverage is to have at least one of a wider width and a lower time duration than a directional beam pointing in a direction of a second network coverage that is lower than the first network coverage.

9. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

obtaining measurement information from the wireless devices;

updating the non-uniform directional network coverage according to the measurement information; and

updating the beam pattern according to the updated non-uniform directional network coverage and therefrom update the beam pattern.

10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the measurement information is indicative of at least one of handover measurements, measurements when camped on directional beams, pilot signal quantities, and a number of failed random access attempts made by the wireless devices.

11. The method according to claim 9, wherein updating the beam pattern comprises:

identifying which directional beam of the directional beams corresponds to which measurement information; and

updating at least one of a beam width value and a time duration value of the directional beams according to the measurement information of the respective directional beam.

12. The method according to claim 9, further comprising:

updating the default beam pattern so as to obtain the updated beam pattern.

13. The method according to claim 1, wherein the network device is configured with a default set of directional beams, and wherein updating the beam pattern comprises:

merging at least two neighboring directional beams in the set of directional beams into one directional beam.

14. The method according to claim 1, wherein the network device is configured with a default set of directional beams, and wherein updating the beam pattern comprises:

splitting at least one directional beam in the set of directional beams into at least two directional beams.

15. The method according to claim 1, wherein the beam pattern is a default beam pattern, the default beam pattern being hard-coded in the network device, or obtained from another network device.

16. The method according to claim 1, wherein the identification signals are part of a random access procedure.

17. The method according to claim 1, wherein each identification signal comprises a physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble.

18. The method according to claim 1, wherein the beam pattern is defined according to long-term statistics.

19. A network device configured for adaptive beamforming scanning, the network device being configured for a non-uniform directional network coverage and comprising communications interface circuitry and processing circuitry, the processing circuitry being configured to cause the network device to:

obtain a beam pattern indicating spatial directions in which reception of identification signals is to be scanned, wherein the beam pattern is defined by the non-uniform directional network coverage; and

scan with directional beams in the spatial directions according to the beam pattern for reception of the identification signals from wireless devices.

The network device according to claim 19, further comprising a storage medium, and wherein the processing circuitry is configured to retrieve a set of operations from the storage medium and to execute the set of operations in order for the network device to obtain the beam pattern and scan with the directional beams.

21. The network device according to claim 19, wherein the network device is part of a radio access network node being any of a radio base station, a Node B, an Evolved Node B, and an Access Point.

22. A communications system configured for adaptive beamforming scanning, the system comprising circuitry defining functionality of at least one network device according to claim 19.

23. A network device configured for adaptive beamforming scanning, the network device being configured for a non-uniform directional network coverage and comprising:

processing circuitry; and

a computer program product storing instructions that, when executed by the processing circuitry, cause the network device to;

obtain a beam pattern indicating spatial directions in which reception of identification signals is to be scanned, wherein the beam pattern is defined by the non-uniform directional network coverage; and

scan with directional beams in the spatial directions according to the beam pattern for reception of the identification signals from wireless devices.

24. The network device according to claim 23, wherein the network device is part of a radio access network node being any of a radio base station, a Node B, an Evolved Node B, and an Access Point.

25. A communications system configured for adaptive beamforming scanning, the system comprising circuitry defining functionality of at least one network device according to claim 23.

26. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing a computer program for adaptive beamforming scanning, the computer program comprising computer code that, when run on processing circuitry of a network device being configured for a non-uniform directional network coverage, causes the network device to:

obtain a beam pattern indicating spatial directions in which reception of identification signals is to be scanned, wherein the beam pattern is defined by the non-uniform directional network coverage; and

scan with directional beams in the spatial directions according to the beam pattern for reception of the identification signals from wireless devices.
