V2V transponder
First Claim
1. A vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication transponder adapted to operate in a first vehicle, wherein the transponder is adapted to transmit a series of V2V basic safety messages, wherein each V2V basic safety message comprises a first vehicle position, a first vehicle heading, and a first vehicle speed;
- wherein the transponder comprises a recommended power level value;
wherein the transponder is adapted to receive V2V basic safety messages from a receive set comprising two or more other transponders;
wherein the transponder comprises a transmit power and is adapted to transmit each message of the series of V2V basic safety messages at the transmit power;
wherein the transponder is adapted to transmit a power level message comprising;
(i) a transmit power level field representing the transmit power level value and (ii) a recommended power level field representing the recommended power level value;
wherein the transponder is adapted to receive power level messages from each of the transponders in the receive set;
wherein the transponder updates the transmit power responsive to data fields in all of the power level messages received from each of the transponders in the receive set.

Abstract
A transceiver in a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system regularly broadcasts basic safety messages, comprising location, heading and speed, of a subject vehicle. The transponder is in communication with similar transponders in other vehicles. In order to manage available bandwidth to assure that safety messages are reliably received, the size of the set of vehicles communicating must be managed. Embodiments describe methods of adjusting the power in a consensus feedback series of power management messages. Each power management message comprises both a field comprising the as-transmitted power and also a field comprising a recommended power for other transponders. Transponders receive many such messages and average the recommended power value to compute their own, new, transmit power level. Power level changes are rate-limited. Reasons to change power level include: quantity of vehicles in range set; distance of vehicles in range set; available bandwidth; and interferences from vehicles outside the range set.
