Golf club head
First Claim
1. A golf club head, comprising:
- a metal body including a crown portion, a sole portion, and a heel portion connecting the crown portion and the sole portion, wherein a hosel formed of a metallic material extends outward from the crown portion proximate the heel portion;
a metal strike plate connected to the metal body and defining a front surface for striking a golf ball, wherein the sole portion, the crown portion, and the heel portion extend rearward from the metal strike plate toward a rear portion of the club head, and the sole portion extends further rearward than the crown portion of the metal body;
wherein the crown portion of the metal body has an outwardly facing attachment surface and a first abutment surface extending between the attachment surface and an outer surface of the crown portion; and
a composite shell coupled to the crown portion, the composite shell having an outer surface, an inner facing surface, and a second abutment surface extending between the outer surface and the inner facing surface of the composite shell, wherein the inner facing surface of the composite shell is smooth;
wherein the attachment surface of the crown portion is adhesively bonded to the inner facing surface of the composite shell, the first abutment surface is connected to the second abutment surface, and the attachment surface is at least four times as wide as a thickness of the composite shell; and
wherein the metal strike plate is formed by casting, forging, rolling or combinations thereof.

Abstract
A golf club head includes a metal body, a metal strike plate connected to the metal body, and a composite shell that is adhesively bonded to a crown portion of the body via corresponding abutment surfaces. A method for forming a golf club head comprises placing an uncured composite material between a core and a mold that comprises a first piece and a second piece. The second piece is moved towards the first piece such that the uncured composite material is compressed between the core and at least a portion of the mold. The uncured composite material is heated. A first portion of the golf club head is removed from the mold. A second portion of the golf club head is provided. The first portion is attached to the second portion. In certain arrangement, the second portion is formed from a metallic material.
