Abstract

An embodiment of a system includes a first number of antennas, a transmitter, and a receiver. The antennas are each spaced from another of the antennas by approximately a distance and are configured to provide, at one or more wavelengths that are greater than twice the distance, a channel capacity that exceeds a saturation channel capacity. The transmitter is configured to generate a second number of signals each having a wavelength that is greater than twice the distance, the second number related to a third number of signal pipes, and to couple each of the second number of signals to a respective one of the antennas. And the receiver is configured to receive from at least one of the antennas a fourth number of signals each having a wavelength that is greater than twice the distance, and to recover information from each of the fourth number of signals, the fourth number being related to the third number.

Claims

1. A transmitter-receiver, comprising:

a number of antennas each spaced from another of the antennas by approximately a distance and configured to provide, at one or more wavelengths that are greater than twice the distance, a channel capacity that exceeds a saturation channel capacity;

a transmitter circuit configured

to generate a number of first signals each having a wavelength that is greater than twice the distance, the number of first signals related to a number of first signal pipes, and

to couple each of the number of first signals to a respective one of the antennas; and

a receiver circuit configured

to receive, from a remote transmitter circuit via at least one of the antennas, a number of second signals each having a wavelength that is greater than twice the distance, the number of second signals related to the number of first signal pipes, and

to recover information from each of the number of second signals.

2. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of antennas forms at least part of an antenna array.

3. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein at least two of the number of antennas form a metamaterial.

4. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein:

one of the number of antennas is configured to have a first transmission characteristic, and another one of the number of antennas is configured to have a second transmission characteristic that is different from the first transmission characteristic, while the transmitter circuit is coupling respective ones of the number of first signals to the one and to the other one of the number of antennas; and

one of the number of antennas is configured to have a first reception characteristic, and another one of the number of antennas is configured to have a second reception characteristic that is different from the first reception characteristic, while the receiver circuit is receiving at least one of the number of second signals with at least one of the one and the other one of the number of antennas.

5. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein:

the transmitter circuit is configured to cause one of the number of antennas to have a first transmission characteristic, and another one of the number of antennas to have a second transmission characteristic that is different from the first transmission characteristic, while the transmitter circuit is coupling respective ones of the number of first signals to the one and to the other one of the number of antennas; and

the receiver circuit is configured to cause one of the number of antennas to have a first reception characteristic, and another one of the number of antennas to have a second reception characteristic that is different from the first reception characteristic, while the receiver circuit is receiving at least one of the number of second signals with at least one of the one and the other one of the number of antennas.

6. The transmitter-receiver of claim 5 wherein:

the transmitter circuit is configured

to cause the one of the number of antennas to have the first transmission characteristic by configuring a parameter of the one of the number of antennas, and

to cause the other one of the number of antennas to have the second transmission characteristic by configuring a parameter of the other one of the number of antennas; and

the receiver circuit is configured

to cause the one of the number of antennas to have the first reception characteristic by configuring a parameter of the one of the number of antennas, and

to cause the other one of the number of antennas to have the second reception characteristic by configuring a parameter of the other one of the number of antennas.

7. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein:

the saturation channel capacity is the capacity of a number of second signal pipes that the number of antennas would provide if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile; and

the number of first signal pipes exceeds the number of second signal pipes.

8. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein:

the saturation channel capacity is the capacity of a number of second signal pipes, the number of second signal pipes being equal to a rank of a channel matrix that would represent a channel if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile; and

the number of first signal pipes exceeds the number of second signal pipes.

9. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the saturation channel capacity is the channel capacity that the number of antennas would provide if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile.

10. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein:

the receiver circuit is further configured to determine channel information for a channel over which the number of second signals propagate from the remote transmitter circuit; and

the transmitter circuit is further configured to provide the determined channel information to the remote transmitter circuit.

11. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the transmitter circuit is configured:

to receive, from a remote transmitter-receiver circuit, channel information for a channel over which the number of first signals propagate; and

to determine the number of first signal pipes in response to the channel information.

12. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of first signals equals the number of first signal pipes.

13. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of first signals is less than the number of first signal pipes.

14. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of first signal pipes equals the number of antennas.

15. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of first signal pipes is less than the number of antennas.

16. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of first signals equals the number of antennas.

17. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of first signals is less than the number of antennas.

18. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of second signals equals the number of antennas.

19. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of second signals is less than the number of antennas.

20. The transmitter-receiver of claim 1 wherein the number of second signals is greater than the number of antennas.

21. A method, comprising:

generating a number of first signals each having a wavelength that is greater than twice a distance, the number of first signals related to a number of first signal pipes of a channel having a capacity;

transmitting each of the number of first signals over the channel with a respective one of a number of antennas each spaced from another of the antennas by approximately the distance such that the capacity of the channel exceeds a saturation capacity of the channel;

receiving each of a number of second signals over the channel with at least one of the number of antennas such that the capacity of the channel exceeds the saturation capacity of the channel, each of the number of second signals having a wavelength that is greater than twice the distance, the number of second signals related to the number of first signal pipes; and

recovering information from the received number of second signals.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein:

the saturation channel capacity is the capacity of a number of second signal pipes that the number of antennas would provide if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile; and

the number of first signal pipes exceeds the number of second signal pipes.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein:

the saturation capacity of the channel is the capacity of a number of second signal pipes, the number of second signal pipes being equal to a rank of a channel matrix that would represent the channel if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile; and

the number of first signal pipes exceeds the number of second signal pipes.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein the saturation capacity of the channel is the channel capacity that the number of antennas would provide if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile.

25. The method of claim 21, further comprising determining the number of first signal pipes.

26. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

determining channel information; and

determining the number of first signal pipes in response to the channel information.

27. A tangible non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing machine, cause the computing machine, or circuitry under control of the computing machine:

to generate a number of first signals each having a wavelength that is greater than twice a distance, the number of first signals related to a number of first signal pipes of a channel having a capacity;

to transmit each of the number of first signals over the channel with a respective one of a number of antennas each spaced from another of the antennas by approximately the distance such that the capacity of the channel exceeds a saturation capacity of the channel;

to receive each of a number of second signals over the channel with at least one of the number of antennas such that the capacity of the channel exceeds the saturation capacity of the channel, each of the number of second signals having a wavelength that is greater than twice the distance, the number of second signals related to the number of first signal pipes; and

to recover information from the received number of second signals.

28. The tangible non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 27 wherein:

the saturation capacity of the channel is the capacity of a number of second signal pipes that the number of antennas would provide if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile; and

the number of first signal pipes exceeds the number of second signal pipes.

29. The tangible non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 27 wherein:

the saturation capacity of the channel is the capacity of a number of second signal pipes, the number of second signal pipes being equal to a rank of a channel matrix that would represent the channel if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile; and

the number of first signal pipes exceeds the number of second signal pipes.

30. The tangible non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 27 wherein the saturation capacity of the channel is the channel capacity that the number of antennas would provide if each of the number of antennas were to have a same antenna profile.
