1. A light source controller comprising:
- a controller input for receiving an output of an ambient light detector arranged to detect an illumination in a volume proximate a light source in an off state;
a controller output; and
a controller operating to evaluate the output from the ambient light detector and automatically generate a control signal on the controller output to control application of power to turn on the light source, the controller controlling application of power to the light source when a first change in the output from the ambient light detector is detected, the first change resulting from an increase in the illumination from a first predetermined level and the controller also generating a power off control signal at the controller output for stopping application of power to the light source for a predetermined period and sampling the output of the ambient light detector during the predetermined period to determine if a second change in the output of the ambient light detector resulting from a decrease in the illumination from a second predetermined level has occurred and if the decrease in the illumination from the second predetermined level is detected, generate an off control signal on the controller output to remove application of power to the light source.

Abstract
A battery powered LED light source is described for illuminating the inside of a dark enclosure when the enclosure is opened in an environment with ambient illumination. Drive circuitry adapted to the LED light source turns on the LEDs when levels of ambient light above a threshold are detected, which may occur if the light source is placed in a dark enclosure that is opened in a lit room. After being opened, the drive circuitry periodically strobes off the LED light source to take ambient light measurements without the contribution of its own LED light for determining if the enclosure has been closed and the LED light source should again be shut off.
