Abstract

Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for determining a position indicator are presented. In some embodiments, position data indicating a position of a mobile device is obtained. A position indicator is determined based on at least one region of a map. The position of the mobile device is located within the at least one region. The position indicator indicates a map-feature-dependent region of the map. The position indicator is provided.

Claims

1. A method for determining a region indicator, comprising:

obtaining position data indicating a position of a mobile device;

accessing a map based on the position of the mobile device, the map having a plurality of regions wherein each region is bounded by one or more features of the map;

determining where the mobile device is located on the map, based on the position data;

determining the region indicator, indicative of a region, of the plurality of regions, in which the mobile device is located, wherein a size and shape of the region indicator is determined based on a privacy setting; and

causing the region indicator to be displayed on a device display.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the privacy setting, an accuracy setting, or both, includes a preferred region type, and the size and shape of the region indicator is determined based on the preferred region type.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the preferred region type includes information indicative of a type of geographical subdivision.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of regions comprises one or more of:

a floor of a multi-story building,

a building,

a seating section,

an airport gate,

a city block,

a lake,

a parking area,

a street section,

a city, or

any combination thereof.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein a boundary for at least one region of the plurality of regions is based on region information received by a user.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the region information comprises:

a drawing,

a boundary selection,

an area selection,

a geometrical object overlaid on the map,

identifying information of the at least one region, or

any combination thereof.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the size and shape of the region indicator is further based on:

a shape of the region in which the mobile device is located,

an accuracy setting,

an accuracy level of the position data,

a variation of the position over a span of time, or

any combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the position data includes received signal strength indication (RSSI) data received by the mobile device from at least one access point (AP), wherein the accuracy level is determined using minimum number of access points (APs) with an associated RSSI exceeding a threshold value.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising causing the device display to display the map.

10. A device for determining a region indicator, the device comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor and configurable for storing instructions;

wherein the processor is configured to;

obtain position data indicating a position of a mobile device;

access a map based on the position of the mobile device, the map having a plurality of regions wherein each region is bounded by one or more features of the map;

determine where the mobile device is located on the map, based on the position data;

determine the region indicator, indicative of a region, of the plurality of regions, in which the mobile device is located, wherein a size and shape of the region indicator is determined based on a privacy setting; and

cause the region indicator to be displayed on a device display.

11. The device of claim 10, further comprising the device display.

12. The device of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to cause the map to be displayed by the device display.

13. The device of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to base the size and shape of the region indicator on a preferred region type included in the privacy setting, an accuracy setting, or both.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein the preferred region type includes information indicative of a type of geographical subdivision.

15. The device of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to determine a boundary for at least one region of the plurality of regions based on region information received by a user.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein the processor is further configured to receive the region information, the region information comprising:

a drawing,

a boundary selection,

an area selection,

a geometrical object overlaid on the map,

identifying information of the at least one region, or

any combination thereof.

17. The device of claim 10, wherein the processor is configured to determine the size and shape of the region indicator further based on:

a shape of the region in which the mobile device is located,

an accuracy setting,

an accuracy level of the position data,

a variation of the position over a span of time, or

any combination thereof.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the position data includes received signal strength indication (RSSI) data received by the device from at least one access point (AP), wherein the processor further configured to determine the accuracy level of the position data using a minimum number of access points (APs) with an associated RSSI exceeding a threshold value.

19. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing computer executable code for determining a region indicator, wherein the executable code, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to:

obtain position data indicating a position of a mobile device;

access a map based on the position of the mobile device, the map having a plurality of regions wherein each region is bounded by one or more features of the map;

determine where the mobile device is located on the map, based on the position data;

determine the region indicator, indicative of a region, of the plurality of regions, in which the mobile device is located, wherein a size and shape of the region indicator is determined based on a privacy setting; and

cause the region indicator to be displayed on a device display.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the executable code is further configured to cause the one or more processors to base the size and shape of the region indicator on a preferred region type included in the privacy setting, an accuracy setting, or both.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 20, wherein the preferred region type includes information indicative of a type of geographical subdivision.

22. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the executable code is further configured to cause the one or more processors to determine a boundary for at least one region of the plurality of regions based on region information received by a user.

23. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the executable code is further configured to determine the size and shape of the region indicator further based on:

a shape of the region in which the mobile device is located,

an accuracy setting,

an accuracy level of the position data,

a variation of the position over a span of time, or

any combination thereof.

24. A device for determining a region indicator, comprising:

means for obtaining position data indicating a position of a mobile device;

means for accessing a map based on the position of the mobile device, the map having a plurality of regions wherein each region is bounded by one or more features of the map;

means for determining where the mobile device is located on the map, based on the position data;

means for determining the region indicator, indicative of a region, of the plurality of regions, in which the mobile device is located, wherein a size and shape of the region indicator is determined based on a privacy setting; and

means for causing the region indicator to be displayed on a display.

25. The device of claim 24, further comprising means for basing the size and shape of the region indicator on a preferred region type included in the privacy setting, an accuracy setting, or both.

26. The device of claim 24, further comprising means for determining a boundary for at least one region of the plurality of regions based on region information received by a user.

27. The device of claim 26, further comprising means for receiving the region information, wherein the region information comprises:

a drawing,

a boundary selection,

an area selection,

a geometrical object overlaid on the map,

identifying information of the at least one region, or

any combination thereof.

28. The device of claim 24, wherein the means for determining the region indicator further comprise means for determining the size and shape of the region indicator further based on:

a shape of the region in which the mobile device is located,

an accuracy setting,

an accuracy level of the position data,

a variation of the position over a span of time, or

any combination thereof.
