1. A method for determining vehicle position based upon light based communication (LBC), the method comprising:

  • receiving, at a receiver array of photodiodes in a first LBC system of a first vehicle, a first digital message, the first digital message being received from a second LBC system of a second vehicle and comprising a location of the second LBC system on the second vehicle;

    measuring, by a processor coupled to the receiver array of photodiodes, a first signal parameter of the first digital message; and

    using trilateration to determine a relative distance between the first vehicle and the second vehicle based at least in part on the first signal parameter of the first digital message; and

    determining a relative orientation between the first vehicle and the second vehicle based on the location of the second LBC system.
