1. A method of operating an apparatus for delivering a collapsible and re-expandable prosthetic heart valve including an expandable frame to an implant site in a patient, wherein the frame comprises a first hollow annular portion, a second hollow annular portion spaced apart from the first hollow annular portion, and an annular array of axially extending struts extending between and connecting the first and second hollow annular portions, and wherein the apparatus includes a valve support structure having an intermediate section having a reduced diameter between a distal section and a proximal section of the valve support structure and a plurality of reduced-diameter regions arranged alternating annularly in spaced apart relationship about an outer surface of the valve support structure at the proximal section, wherein each of the plurality of reduced-diameter regions are in axial communication with the intermediate section, and a sheath structure, the method comprising:

  • disposing in a collapsed condition the second hollow annular portion around the valve support structure;

    positioning a portion of the second hollow annular portion when collapsed within the intermediate section of the valve support structure;

    positioning at least one of the axially extending struts within respective ones of each of the plurality of alternating reduced-diameter regions;

    surrounding a portion of the frame within the intermediate section and plurality of alternating reduced-diameter regions with the sheath structure; and

    moving the sheath structure in a direction relative to the valve support structure to completely uncover the valve for expansion of the frame at the implant site.
