1. An optical system, comprising:

  • a light-transmitting substrate having at least two major surfaces parallel to each other defining sides of the substrate, and edges;

    an array of partially reflecting surfaces embedded inside the substrate between the two major surfaces, wherein the surfaces are not parallel to the major surfaces of the substrate;

    an optical device for coupling input light waves emanating from a display source into the substrate to be trapped inside the substrate by total internal reflection; and

    at least two partially reflecting surfaces of said array of partially reflecting surfaces partially coupling light waves out of the substrate as image light waves, the input light waves entering the substrate and the image light waves exiting the substrate at the same side of the substrate.
