Global light compensation in a variety of displays
First Claim
1. A method for controlling a display, the display comprising a backlight and a display panel illuminated by the backlight, wherein the backlight comprises one or more back light sources and a quantum dot layer and the display panel comprises one or more light modulation layers, wherein one of the one or more light modulation layers comprises light valves, the method comprising:
- measuring color space values of the illumination in a first spatial region representing a first plurality of pixels of the display panel and in a second spatial region representing a second plurality of pixels of the display panel;
determining a first white point and a first color gamut of the first spatial region and a second white point and a second color gamut of the second spatial region so as to obtain a non-uniform illumination pattern;
deriving from the first and second white points and the first and second color gamuts of the first and second spatial region of the non-uniform illumination pattern transformation matrixes or transform functions representing deviations from a specific white point or a specific color gamut;
generating an illumination compensation pattern configured to homogenize the color space values of the first and second pluralities of pixels in the first and second spatial region by computing inverse transformation matrixes that negate the deviations represented by the transformation matrixes or by computing inverse transform functions that negate the deviations represented by the transform functions;
deriving drive values from algorithmic compensation implementing the illumination compensation pattern; and
controlling the light valves with the drive values.

Abstract
A non-uniform illumination pattern is determined with a display panel of a display device. The non-uniform illumination pattern comprises different values of the one or more illumination properties in first and second spatial regions of the display panel. An illumination compensation pattern is generated based at least in part on the non-uniform illumination pattern. The illumination compensation pattern is configured to homogenize values of the illumination properties in a plurality of spatial regions of the display panel that include the first and second spatial regions, and implemented in the display device.
