Abstract

A system includes a differencing engine and a layout engine of the differencing engine or coupled to the differencing engine. The differencing engine is configured to direct comparison of two or more document components each of which includes respective media content, and each of which has associated metadata providing information about the respective document component. The layout engine is configured to generate a layout of a panoptically-arranged visual representation of the document components or a comparison thereof according to a layout model, and according to the associated metadata. And the differencing engine is configured to communicate the layout.

Claims

1. An apparatus for implementation of a panoptic visualization document differencing system, the apparatus comprising a processor and a memory storing executable instructions that in response to execution by the processor cause the apparatus to at least:

generate a comparison document component based on a comparison of respective non-text graphical media content of two or more source document components of a plurality of document components, each document component including respective non-text graphical media content and having associated metadata providing structured information about the document component, the comparison document component including respective non-text graphical media content and having associated metadata providing structured information about the two or more source document components;

interpret the associated metadata for the comparison document component to select a layout model from a plurality of two-dimensional layout models that are displayable independent of one another, and identify one or more second document components of the plurality of document components, according thereto, the structured information provided by the associated metadata for the comparison document component further identifying a link between the comparison document component and one or more second document components, the link establishing one or more logical relationships between the respective non-text graphical media content of the comparison document component and one or more second document components, the one or more logical relationships excluding pagination order sequence and chapterization of the comparison document component and one or more second document components; and

generate a two-dimensional layout of a panoptically-arranged images of document components including the comparison document component and one or more second document components according to the associated metadata therefor, and according to the selected layout model and independent of other layout models of the plurality of two-dimensional layout models, the images of the document components including images of the respective non-text graphical media content thereof, the one or more logical relationships between the respective non-text graphical media content being expressed in the two-dimensional layout by a difference in size or depth of at least some of the images relative to others of the images.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the two or more source document components include a first source document component and one or more second source document components, and

wherein the apparatus being caused to generate the comparison document component includes being caused to generate the comparison document component including an overlay of respective non-text graphical media content of the first source document component over respective non-text graphical media content of the one or more second source document components.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the first source document component includes a plurality of first source document components, and the second document component includes a plurality of second source document components,

wherein the apparatus being caused to generate the comparison document component includes being caused to generate a plurality of comparison document components each of which is based on the comparison of respective non-text graphical media content of a respective first source document component from the plurality of first source document components, and a respective one or more second source document components from the plurality of second source document components, and

wherein the apparatus being caused to generate the layout includes being caused to generate the layout including images of the plurality of comparison document components.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein for each document component of at least some of the document components of the layout, a plurality of copies of the image of the document component are stored at respective resolutions, the structured information specifies at least a size of the image of the document component in the layout, and the apparatus being caused to generate the layout includes being caused to retrieve a copy of the plurality of copies that is at a resolution that matches the size specified by the structured information.

The apparatus of claim 4, wherein for each document component of at least some of the document components of the layout, the plurality of copies of the image of the document component are divided across zoom levels into progressively larger numbers of tiles each of which covers a spatial area of the image at a respective zoom level of the zoom levels, and apparatus being caused to retrieve the copy of the plurality of copies includes being caused to retrieve tiles of the copy that is at the resolution that matches the size specified by the structured information.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the plurality of document components including the two or more source document components and one or more second document components are pages of one or more electronic documents.

7. A method comprising:

generating a comparison document component based on a comparison of respective non-text graphical media content of two or more source document components of a plurality of document components, each document component including respective non-text graphical media content and having associated metadata providing structured information about the document component, the comparison document component including respective non-text graphical media content and having associated metadata providing structured information about the two or more source document components;

interpreting the associated metadata for the comparison document component to select a layout model from a plurality of two-dimensional layout models that are displayable independent of one another, and identifying one or more second document components of the plurality of document components, according thereto, the structured information provided by the associated metadata for the comparison document component further identifying a link between the comparison document component and one or more second document components, the link establishing one or more logical relationships between the respective non-text graphical media content of the comparison document component and one or more second document components, the one or more logical relationships excluding pagination order sequence and chapterization of the comparison document component and one or more second document components; and

generating a two-dimensional layout of a panoptically-arranged images of document components including the comparison document component and one or more second document components according to the associated metadata therefor, and according to the selected layout model and independent of other layout models of the plurality of two-dimensional layout models, the images of the document components including images of the respective non-text graphical media content thereof, the one or more logical relationships between the respective non-text graphical media content being expressed in the two-dimensional layout by a difference in size or depth of at least some of the images relative to others of the images.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the two or more source document components include a first source document component and one or more second source document components, and

wherein generating the comparison document component includes generating the comparison document component including an overlay of respective non-text graphical media content of the first source document component over respective non-text graphical media content of the one or more second source document components.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the first source document component includes a plurality of first source document components, and the second source document component includes a plurality of second source document components,

wherein generating the comparison includes generating a plurality of comparison document components each of which is based on the comparison of respective non-text graphical media content of a respective first source document component from the plurality of first source document components, and a respective one or more second source document components from the plurality of second source document components, and

wherein generating the layout includes generating the layout including images of the plurality of comparison document components.

The method of claim 7, wherein for each document component of at least some of the document components of the layout, a plurality of copies of the image of the document component are stored at respective resolutions, the structured information specifies at least a size of the image of the document component in the layout, and generating the layout includes retrieving a copy of the plurality of copies that is at a resolution that matches the size specified by the structured information.

The method of claim 10, wherein for each document component of at least some of the document components of the layout, the plurality of copies of the image of the document component are divided across zoom levels into progressively larger numbers of tiles each of which covers a spatial area of the image at a respective zoom level of the zoom levels, and retrieving the copy of the plurality of copies includes retrieving tiles of the copy that is at the resolution that matches the size specified by the structured information.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein the plurality of document components including the two or more source document components and one or more second document components are pages of one or more electronic document.

13. A computer-readable storage medium that is non-transitory and has computer-readable program code portions stored therein that, in response to execution by a processor, cause an apparatus to at least:

generate a comparison document component based on a comparison of respective non-text graphical media content of two or more source document components of a plurality of document components, each document component including respective non-text graphical media content and having associated metadata providing structured information about the document component, the comparison document component including respective non-text graphical media content and having associated metadata providing structured information about the two or more source document components;

interpret the associated metadata for the comparison document component to select a layout model from a plurality of two-dimensional layout models that are displayable independent of one another, and identify one or more second document components of the plurality of document components, according thereto, the structured information provided by the associated metadata for the comparison document component further identifying a link between the comparison document component and one or more second document components, the link establishing one or more logical relationships between the respective non-text graphical media content of the comparison document component and one or more second document components, the one or more logical relationships excluding pagination order sequence and chapterization of the comparison document component and one or more second document components; and

generate a two-dimensional layout of a panoptically-arranged images of document components including the comparison document component and one or more second document components according to the associated metadata therefor, and according to the selected layout model and independent of other layout models of the plurality of two-dimensional layout models, the images of the document components including images of the respective non-text graphical media content thereof, the one or more logical relationships between the respective non-text graphical media content being expressed in the two-dimensional layout by a difference in size or depth of at least some of the images relative to others of the images.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the two or more source document components include a first source document component and one or more second source document components,

wherein the apparatus being caused to generate the comparison document component includes being caused to generate the comparison document component including an overlay of respective non-text graphical media content of the first source document component over respective non-text graphical media content of the one or more second source document components.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein the first source document component includes a plurality of first source document components, and the second source document component includes a plurality of second source document components,

wherein the apparatus being caused to generate the comparison document component includes being caused to generate a plurality of comparison document components each of which is based on the comparison of respective non-text graphical media content of a respective first source document component from the plurality of first source document components, and a respective one or more second source document components from the plurality of second source document components, and

wherein the apparatus being caused to generate the layout includes being caused to generate the layout including images of the plurality of comparison document components.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein for each document component of at least some of the document components of the layout, a plurality of copies of the image of the document component are stored at respective resolutions, the structured information specifies at least a size of the image of the document component in the layout, and the apparatus being caused to generate the layout includes being caused to retrieve a copy of the plurality of copies that is at a resolution that matches the size specified by the structured information.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, wherein for each document component of at least some of the document components of the layout, the plurality of copies of the image of the document component are divided across zoom levels into progressively larger numbers of tiles each of which covers a spatial area of the image at a respective zoom level of the zoom levels, and the apparatus being caused to retrieve the copy of the plurality of copies includes being caused to retrieve tiles of the copy that is at the resolution that matches the size specified by the structured information.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the plurality of document components including the two or more source document components and one or more second document components are pages of one or more electronic documents.
