Abstract

An electrical stimulation system provides stimulation therapy to a patient. The system includes a neurostimulation lead that contacts patient tissue and couples with an implantable stimulation device, such as an implantable pulse generator, that receives stimulation parameters for providing stimulation therapy to a patient. The implantable stimulation device includes a header with a plurality of connector assemblies that receive an end of the neurostimulation lead, and a case containing a charging coil and a telemetry coil coupled to programming circuitry on a printed circuit board, which is in turn coupled to the connector assemblies via a feedthrough assembly. The telemetry coil receives data from an external programmer and transmits the data to the programming circuitry, which in turn uses the data to communicate to the connector assemblies and the neurostimulation lead to provide stimulation therapy to a patient.

Claims

1. An implantable medical device, comprising:

a case;

a circuit board within the case;

a charging coil within the case and positioned on a first side of the circuit board;

a telemetry coil within the case and positioned on a second side of the circuit board, wherein the telemetry coil is positioned on a spacer that maintains a gap between the telemetry coil and the second side of the circuit board; and

a header coupled to the case, wherein the header comprises one or more connector assemblies that are each configured to receive a stimulation lead.

2. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the spacer comprises a main body and an outer flange.

3. The implantable medical device of claim 2, wherein the telemetry coil is positioned on the flange.

4. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the telemetry coil is coupled to the circuit board by one or more pins that are affixed to the spacer.

5. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the spacer comprises a plurality of holes.

6. The implantable medical device of claim 5, wherein one or more pins extend through one or more of the holes to connect the telemetry coil to the circuit board.

7. The implantable medical device of claim 5, wherein one or more pins extend through one or more of the holes to mechanically connect the telemetry coil to the circuit board.

8. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the telemetry coil is configured to send and receive data to and from an external device via inductive coupling.

9. The implantable medical device of claim 8, wherein the telemetry coil is configured to send and receive the data using a Frequency Shift Keying protocol.

10. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the charging coil is configured to receive a charging field that is generated by an external charger.

11. The implantable medical device of claim 10, further comprising circuitry to modulate an impedance of the charging coil to communicate data to the external charger.

12. The implantable medical device of claim 1, further comprising decoupling circuitry that is configured to alter operation of the charging coil.

13. The implantable medical device of claim 12, wherein the decoupling circuitry is configured to decouple the charging coil from charging circuitry in the implantable medical device when the telemetry coil is sending or receiving data from an external device.

14. The implantable medical device of claim 1, further comprising a feedthrough assembly that is positioned between the case and the header.

15. The implantable medical device of claim 14, wherein the feedthrough assembly comprises a flange that defines a well, and wherein a plurality of ceramic plates are positioned within the well.

16. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein each of the connector assemblies comprises a plurality of connector contacts.

17. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein each of the connector assemblies comprises a fastener that is configured to secure the stimulation lead.

18. The implantable medical device of claim 17, further comprising at least one septum that has an outer block and a separate inner block, wherein adjacent edges of the inner and outer blocks form at least one slot for receiving a tool for manipulating the fastener.
