1. A method, comprising:

  • at a portable multifunction device with a touch screen display;

    displaying a portion of an electronic document on the touch screen display, wherein the displayed portion of the electronic document has a vertical position in the electronic document;

    displaying a first vertical bar on top of the displayed portion of the electronic document, wherein the first vertical bar is displayed proximate to a vertical edge of the displayed portion of the electronic document, wherein the first vertical bar has a vertical position on top of the displayed portion of the electronic document that corresponds to the vertical position in the electronic document of the displayed portion of the electronic document;

    detecting a movement of an object on or near the touch screen display, wherein the movement is in a direction on the displayed portion of the electronic document;

    in response to detecting the movement;

    (a) scrolling the electronic document displayed on the touch screen display in the direction of movement of the object so that a new portion of the electronic document is displayed, (b) replacing the first vertical bar with a second vertical bar, (c) moving the second vertical bar to a new vertical position such that the new vertical position corresponds to the vertical position in the electronic document of the displayed new portion of the electronic document, and maintaining the second vertical bar proximate to the vertical edge of the displayed portion of the electronic document; and

    in response to a predetermined condition being met, replacing the second vertical bar with the first vertical bar, while continuing to display the displayed portion of the electronic document, wherein the displayed portion of the electronic document has a vertical extent that is less than a vertical extent of the electronic document,wherein;

    i) an opacity of the first vertical bar is defined by an alpha channel value of 0.1 or more,ii) an opacity of the second vertical bar is defined by an alpha channel value of 1 or less, andiii) the alpha channel value of the first vertical bar is lower by at least 0.3 than the alpha channel value of the second vertical bar, and wherein a difference between the alpha channel values of the first and second vertical bars is smaller for a higher brightness setting of the touch screen display and is larger for a lower brightness setting of the touch screen display,such that a difference between the opacities of the first and second vertical bars is human-observable, and such that a segment of the electronic document which lies beneath the first vertical bar is partially human-observable.
