Abstract

A battery operated portable communication device provides converged functionality while avoiding resets to the device. Composite logic circuitry formed of at least one comparator and a logic interface controls current limiting to a primary load formed of high power land mobile radio (LMR) devices and programming to secondary loads formed of non-LMR peripherals. At least one current limit control signal is used to control current to the primary load under high current mode operations. Another control signal provides an interruption alert to a slave processor for controlled programming of the secondary loads during the high current operations of the primary load. Current to the primary load is restored while the secondary load is interrupted. Operation of secondary load processes is resumed when the primary load ceases high power operation.

Claims

1. A portable communication device, comprising:

a battery for powering the portable communication device, the battery having a battery profile stored therein;

a push-to-talk (PTT) button;

a master processor uploaded with the battery profile, the master processor controlling a primary load of the portable communication device;

a slave processor controlling a secondary load of the portable communication device;

a comparator bank programmed by the master processor based on the uploaded battery profile, the comparator bank monitoring for transients on the battery and generating a plurality of comparator output control signals in response thereto;

a logic interface receiving the plurality of comparator output control signals and a push-to-talk (PTT) status, the logic interface generating a plurality of current limit control signals in response thereto,

wherein;

at least one of the plurality of current limit control signals controls a current limiter selection stage, the current limiter selection stage providing a current supply to the primary load of the portable communication device; and

at least one of the plurality of current limit control signals providing an interruption alert to the slave processor for current limiting the secondary load, the interruption to the secondary load occurring during predetermined high current drain conditions of the primary load during a PTT button assertion.

2. The portable communication device of claim 1, wherein the portable communication device is a converged device in which the primary load comprises high power land mobile radio (LMR) circuits and the secondary load comprises one or more non-LMR slave peripherals.

3. The portable communication device of claim 2, wherein the transients on the battery are monitored by:

an instantaneous voltage measurement being sensed from the battery; and

an instantaneous current measurement sensed at a predetermined high power branch of the portable communication device associated with high current peaks.

4. The portable communication device of claim 1, wherein the comparator bank and logic interface reduce loading of non-mission critical processes of the secondary load to restore full current operation to mission critical functions of the primary load of the portable communication device.

5. The portable communication device of claim 1, wherein the comparator bank is formed of a plurality of comparators programmed with predetermined voltage thresholds, the predetermined voltage thresholds being programmed based on the battery profile.

6. The portable communication device of claim 1, wherein the comparator bank is tripped in response to:

a user-induced push-to-talk (PTT) signal; and

a logical signal from the master processor.

The portable communication device of claim 1, wherein the comparator bank comprises a programmable comparator bank formed of a plurality of comparators which progressively trip to cause the slave processor to reduce both average and peak power consumption below a predetermined budgetary level commensurate with the battery profile.

The portable communication device of claim 1, wherein the comparator bank comprises programmable comparator bank formed of a plurality of comparators which progressively trip to interrupt the slave processor and predetermined peripheral applications controlled by the slave processor during a loud audio mode of the portable communication device.

9. The portable communication device of claim 1, wherein the portable communication device is a converged device providing LMR and LTE operation, and wherein the comparator bank and logic interface are configured to:

enable the slave processor to operate LTE applications in parallel with the master processor operating LMR functions during non-high power LMR modes; and

manage interruption control signals to the slave processor to control and minimize loading of LTE applications during high power LMR modes.

10. A method of managing a portable communication device, comprising:

reading, by a master processor, battery information of a battery of the portable communication device;

configuring a comparator bank with a plurality of voltage thresholds based on the battery information;

applying a sensed battery voltage to the comparator bank for comparing to the plurality of voltage thresholds;

detecting a push-to-talk (PTT) assertion;

tripping one or more of the comparators in response to the sensed battery voltage exceeding one or more of the plurality of voltage thresholds thereby indicating a high current condition;

asserting a plurality of logic control signals including asserting a primary load control signal and asserting a slave processor interrupt control signal during a predetermined time;

selectively current limit a primary load of the portable communication device in response to the primary load control signal;

reducing loading of secondary load processes in response to the slave processor interrupt control signal in an amount suitable to restore current to the primary load; and

restoring the primary load to a full current during the reduced loading of the secondary load processes.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising;

determining that the PTT has been released;

determining that the predetermined time has expired;

deasserting current limiting to the primary load in response to the PTT being released and the predetermined time expiring; and

releasing the interrupt control signal to the slave processor.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein releasing the interrupt control signal to the slave processor re-establishes loading of the secondary load processes.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein applying a sensed voltage to the comparator bank further comprises:

monitoring for battery transients; and

progressively tripping a plurality of comparators within the comparator bank based on the battery transients.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the primary load provides land mobile radio (LMR) functionality, and the secondary load processes provides non-LMR, non-mission critical functionality.

15. The method of claim 10, where the primary load comprises at least a transmit radio frequency power amplifier (Tx RFPA).

16. The method of claim 15, where the primary load further comprises:

a transmit audio power amplifier for generating alert tones during transmit.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein reducing loading of the secondary load processes of the portable communication device comprises reducing loading of non-mission critical functions in response to the slave processor interrupt control signal.
