1. A neural probe, comprising:

  • a semiconductor substrate comprising a back end and one or more elongated shanks for penetrating neural tissue, each elongated shank comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

    at least one optical source integral to the neural probe for illuminating the neural tissue,wherein the optical source is located proximate the distal end of one or more elongated shanks such that, when the probe is implanted, the neural tissue may be illuminated without the use of an optical waveguide; and

    one or more conductive microelectrodes located proximate the distal end of one or more of the elongated shanks for monitoring neural activity,wherein the at least one optical source comprises a buffer layer, an active semiconductor layer comprising a III-V semiconductor, and a passivation layer.
