1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

  • receiving, at a first acoustic device, a representation of an audio signal;

    detecting a dynamic range of the representation of the audio signal;

    determining available dynamic range headroom as a difference between a dynamic range of a system in which the audio codec is disposed, and the dynamic range of the representation of the audio signal;

    selecting a first gain factor such that an associated amount of amplification does not exceed the available dynamic range headroom;

    amplifying the representation of the audio signal by the first gain factor to generate an amplified input signal;

    processing the amplified input signal by an audio codec comprising one or more processors to generate a processed signal that represents a portion of the audio signal to be output by a second acoustic device;

    transmitting the processed signal to the second acoustic device.
