1. A method used by a playback device, the method comprising:

  • when a first version of a transmission protocol is being used to transmit a signal between the playback device and a display device, transmitting first meta data to the display device using the first version of the transmission protocol without transmitting second meta data to the display device; and

    when a second version of the transmission protocol is being used to transmit the signal between the playback device and the display device, transmitting the first meta data and the second meta data to the display device using the second version of the transmission protocol, the second version of the transmission protocol being different from the first version of the transmission protocol,wherein the first meta data including information that is commonly used for a plurality of images included in a continuous playback unit of a first video signal and relates to a luminance range of the first video signal, andwherein the second meta data includes information that is commonly used for a unit subdivided compared to the continuous playback unit of the first video signal and relates to the luminance range of the first video signal.
