System for monitoring a physiological parameter of players engaged in a sporting activity
First Claim
1. A system for monitoring and analyzing impacts experienced by a player when engaged in a contact sport, the player wearing a single piece of protective sports equipment adjacent a body part that receives and attenuates impacts while the player is engaged in the contact sport, the system comprising:
- a reporting unit positioned within the single piece of protective sports equipment worn against the body part of the player while engaged in the contact sport, the reporting unit having;
(i) a plurality of sensing devices arranged against the player'"'"'s body part to measure changes in acceleration of the player'"'"'s body part resulting from impacts applied to the protective sports equipment and to generate impact-related data for each of said impacts;
(ii) a control unit configured to process said impact-related data resulting from impacts applied to the protective sports equipment, the control unit also being configured to calculate impact-related information for each of said impacts, wherein said impact-related information includes;
(a) a body part acceleration result,(b) a direction of the impact;
(c) a location of the impact, and(d) a duration of the impact; and
(iii) a telemetry element configured to transmit an alert signal when said calculated body part acceleration result exceeds a predetermined value;
a remote handheld signaling device configured to both receive said alert signal from the telemetry element and display an alert when said calculated body part acceleration result exceeds said predetermined value, wherein the remote handheld signaling device is worn or held by a person not engaged in the contact sport;
an internet enabled storage device configured to both receive and store impact-related information transmitted from the remote handheld signaling device, wherein the internet enabled storage device is not required to be co-located with;
(i) the reporting unit, (ii) the remote handheld signaling device, or (iii) an internet enabled viewing device; and
the internet enabled viewing device configured to connect to the internet enabled storage device through the internet, said internet enabled viewing device allowing a person to view;
(i) the body part acceleration result for each impact,(ii) the location of each impact,(iii) the time each impact occurred, and(iv) cumulative impacts sustained by the player over a predefined amount of time.

Abstract
The present invention provides a system for monitoring a physiological parameter of players engaged in a sporting activity. The system includes a plurality of reporting units, a controller, and a signaling device. The reporting unit has an arrangement of sensing devices that measure the physiological parameter of an individual player and generate parameter data. The controller receives the parameter data transmitted from each reporting unit and then processes the parameter data to calculate a parameter result. When the parameter result exceeds a predetermined value, the controller communicates with a signaling device that provides an alert to sideline personnel to monitor the player(s) in question. The system also includes a remote storage device for holding historical data collected by the system which permits subsequent analysis. The system can monitor a number of player physiological parameters, including the acceleration of a player'"'"'s body part that experiences an impact and the temperature of each player.
