Abstract

A system includes a plurality of RFID chips affixed to a medical item, a device reader such as a data collection engine device, and a server device. The data collection engine wirelessly transmits power to an RFID chips and receives first medical data from the RFID chip while the RFID chip is activated by the power receiver. The data collection engine generates a first message indicative of the first medical data to be sent to the server device. The server device can determine aspects of the medical item such as position and risk states based upon the first medical data.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

a medical item including a passive-type RFID tag, the passive-type RFID tag including;

a controller configured according to instructions in memory to generate a message including identification information; and

an antenna portion configured to transmit the message;

a device reader communicating with the passive-type RFID tag, wherein the device reader comprises;

a transceiver configured to receive the message from the passive-type RFID tag;

a power transmission subsystem including a power source and an antenna arranged to wirelessly transmit power from the power source to the passive-type RFID tag;

a controller operatively coupled to the transceiver; and

one or more memory sources operatively coupled to the controller, the one or more memory sources including instructions for configuring the controller to generate one or more messages indicative of the identification information to be sent by the transceiver to a server device via a network connection;

wherein the server device comprises;

a transceiver configured to receive the one or more messages from the device reader;

a controller operatively coupled to the transceiver; and

one or more memory sources operatively coupled to the controller, the one or more memory sources including instructions for configuring the controller to associate the identification information of the passive-type RFID tag with the first medical item in a database.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller of the passive-type RFID tag generates the messages by modulating an input impedance thereby causing modulation of an RF amplitude and phase reflected by the antenna portion.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein one or more memory sources operatively coupled to the controller of the RFID tag contains a total of at least 544 bits of memory.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the medical item is a smart IV pump.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the server device is further configured to store usage parameters associated with the medical item based upon the identification information in the database.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the server device is further configured to track trends and usage patterns of the medical item based upon the stored usage parameters.

7. The system of claim 5, wherein the server device stores location information associated with the device reader and associates the location information with the medical item in database.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of the medical items and a plurality of the device readers, wherein each of the plurality of the device readers communicates with one or more of the plurality of the medical items,

wherein the server device receives the one or more messages from each of the plurality of device readers,

wherein the server device stores location information associated with each of the plurality of device readers,

wherein the controller is further configured to generate an alert when a predetermined number of the medical items in a particular location.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of the medical items and a plurality of the device readers, wherein each of the plurality of the device readers communicates with one or more of a plurality of the passive-type RFID tags respectively associated with the plurality of the medical items,

wherein the server device receives the one or more messages from each of the plurality of device readers,

wherein the server device stores location information associated with each of the plurality of device readers,

wherein the server device is further configured to generate an output value from a trained model based upon the location information associated with each of the plurality of device readers and the identification information associated with the plurality of the passive-type RFID tags.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the server device is further configured to generate an output value from a trained model based upon the identification information.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the transceiver of the device reader transmits an unmodulated Radio Frequency (RF) carrier signal to the passive-type RFID tag and receives the message as a backscattered reply from the passive-type RFID tag.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the passive-type RFID tag receives power from and communicates with the device reader with a frequency range of 860 MHz to 960 MHz, inclusive.

13. A device reader communicating with a plurality of RFID tags, the device reader comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive messages from a first and second RFID tags of the plurality of RFID tags and send messages to one of the first and second RFID tags to write data to the respective one of the first and second RFID tags;

a power transmission subsystem including a power source and an antenna arranged to wirelessly transmit power from the power source to a passive-type RFID tag of the plurality of RFID tags;

a controller operatively coupled to the transceiver; and

a plurality of memory sources operatively coupled to the controller, the plurality of memory sources including instructions for configuring the controller to generate one or more messages indicative of identification information included in the messages received from the first and second RFID tags to be sent by the transceiver to a server device via a network connection.

14. The device reader of claim 13, wherein the controller is configured to execute an Android, Linux, or Windows Operating System.

15. The device reader of claim 13, wherein the instructions included in the memory further include a Near Field Communication (NFC) Reader library.

16. The device reader of claim 13, wherein the plurality of memory sources including a dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and flash memory.

17. The device reader of claim 13, wherein the power transmission subsystem modulates an RF transmission by the antenna to generate the messages and the antenna transmits an unmodulated RF transmission to transmit the power to the passive-type RFID tag.

18. The device reader of claim 13, wherein the power transmission subsystem wirelessly transmits 10 dBm to 31.5 dBm of power.

19. The device reader of claim 13, wherein the transceiver communicates with the passive-type RFID tag within a frequency range of 860 MHz to 960 MHz, inclusive.

20. The device reader of claim 13, wherein the transceiver communicates with the passive-type RFID tag using DSB-ASK, SSB-ASK or PR-ASK modulation.
