Abstract

A control system for a HVAC system includes a user interface configured to present information to a user and receive inputs from the user, a temperature sensor configured to measure an air temperature inside of the building space, and a processing circuit. The processing circuit is configured to receive a user-preferred temperature setpoint, compare the user-preferred temperature setpoint to the measured air temperature, project an energy usage amount for the user-preferred energy setpoint, generate a user comfort score for the user-preferred energy setpoint, generate an overall score for the user-preferred temperature setpoint, and present, by the user interface, the user with a setpoint scoring interface including the overall score.

Claims

1. A control system for a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, the control system comprising:

a user interface configured to present information to a user and receive inputs from the user;

a temperature sensor configured to measure an air temperature inside of the building space; and

a processing circuit, the processing circuit comprising a processor and a memory, the memory storing instructions that are executable by the processor to cause the processor to;

receive, by the user interface, a user-preferred temperature setpoint;

compare the user-preferred temperature setpoint to a measured air temperature;

based on the comparison, project an energy usage amount for the user-preferred energy setpoint;

based on the comparison, generate a user comfort score for the user-preferred energy setpoint;

based on the projected energy usage amount and the user comfort score, generate an overall score for the user-preferred temperature setpoint; and

present, by the user interface, the user with a setpoint scoring interface including the overall score.

The control system of claim 1, wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to cause the processing circuit to provide control signals to components of the HVAC system to cause the air temperature of the building space to converge with the user-preferred setpoint, wherein the user is presented with the setpoint scoring interface prior to the providing of the control signals.

3. The control system of claim 1, wherein the setpoint scoring interface includes the energy usage amount and the user comfort score.

4. The control system of claim 1, wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to cause the processing circuit to:

determine that the overall score is above a threshold score; and

in response to the determination, generate an alternative setpoint, the alternative setpoint having a lower projected energy usage associated therewith than the user-preferred setpoint, wherein the setpoint scoring interface includes the alternative setpoint.

5. The control system of claim 4, wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to cause the processing circuit to:

receive, by the user interface, a user preference to use the alternative setpoint; and

provide control signals to components of the HVAC system to cause the air temperature of the building space to converge with the alternative setpoint.

6. The control system of claim 1, wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to cause the processing circuit to:

determine required run times for the HVAC system to operate at a plurality of setpoints, wherein each setpoint includes a plurality required run times, wherein each required run time is associated with a temperature external to the building space and an initial measured temperature inside the building space; and

store the required run times in the memory.

7. The control system of claim 6, wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to cause the processing circuit to:

receive user utility usage data; and

based on the user utility usage data, project a utility usage amount for each of the plurality of run times for each of the plurality of setpoints.

8. The control system of claim 7, wherein projecting the energy usage amount for the user-preferred setpoint includes, based on the comparison and a measured temperature external to the building, retrieving a first run time and an associated utility usage amount from the memory.

9. The control system of claim 1, wherein the overall score is a weighted combination of the energy usage amount and the user comfort score, wherein the weights vary based on a mode of operation of the controller.

10. A computer implemented method, comprising:

receiving, by a controller of an HVAC system, a user-preferred temperature setpoint for a building space;

determining, by the controller, a value of an environmental variable either internal to or external to the building space;

projecting, by the controller, an energy usage amount for the user-preferred energy setpoint based on the value of the environmental variable;

generating, by the controller, a user comfort score for the user-preferred energy setpoint based on the value of the environmental variable;

based on the projected energy usage amount and the user comfort score, generating, by the controller, an overall score for the user-preferred temperature setpoint; and

presenting, by the controller, the user with a setpoint scoring interface including the overall score.

The method of claim 10 further comprising providing, by the controller, control signals to components of the HVAC system to cause the air temperature of the building space to converge with the user-preferred setpoint, wherein the user is presented with the setpoint scoring interface prior to the provision of the control signals.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the setpoint scoring interface includes the energy usage amount and the user comfort score.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

determining, by the controller, that the overall score is above a threshold score; and

in response to the determination, generating, by the controller an alternative setpoint, the alternative setpoint having a lower projected energy usage associated therewith than the user-preferred setpoint, wherein the setpoint scoring interface includes the alternative setpoint.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

receiving, by the controller, a user preference to use the alternative setpoint; and

providing, by the controller, control signals to components of the HVAC system to cause the air temperature of the building space to converge with the alternative setpoint.

15. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

determining, by the controller, required run times for the HVAC system to operate at a plurality of setpoints, wherein each setpoint includes a plurality required run times, wherein each required run time is associated with a temperature external to the building space and an initial measured temperature inside the building space; and

storing, by the controller, the required run times.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising

receiving, by the controller, user utility usage data;

and

based on the user utility usage data, projecting, by the controller, a utility usage amount for each of the plurality of runtimes for each of the plurality of setpoints.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein projecting the energy usage amount for the user-preferred setpoint includes, based on the based on the value of the environmental variable and a measured temperature external to the building, retrieving a run time and an associated utility usage amount from a memory.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the overall score is a weighted combination of the energy usage amount and the user comfort score, wherein the weights vary depending on a mode of operation of the controller.

19. A non-transitory computer readable media having computer-executable instructions embodied therein that, when executed by a processor of a thermostat, cause the thermostat to perform operations to control a temperature of a building space, the operations including:

comparing a user-preferred temperature setpoint to a measured air temperature;

projecting an energy usage amount for the user-preferred energy setpoint in response to the comparison;

generating a user comfort score for the user-preferred energy setpoint in response to the comparison;

generating an overall score for the user-preferred temperature setpoint in response to the projected energy usage amount and the user comfort score; and

display on the thermostat a setpoint scoring interface including the overall score.

The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19, wherein the operations further include providing control signals to components of the HVAC system to cause the air temperature of the building space to converge with the user-preferred setpoint, wherein the user is presented with the setpoint scoring interface prior to the provision of the control signals.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19, wherein the operations further include:

determining that the overall score is above a threshold score; and

in response to the determination, generating an alternative setpoint, the alternative setpoint having a lower projected energy usage associated therewith than the user-preferred setpoint, wherein the setpoint scoring interface includes the alternative setpoint.

22. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19, wherein the operations further include measuring a humidity inside of the building space, wherein the user comfort score is further based on the measured humidity.

23. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 22, wherein generating the user comfort score includes:

identifying a recommended temperature from a pre-established set of recommended temperature values based on the measured humidity; and

determining a difference between the user-preferred temperature setpoint and the recommended temperature, wherein the user comfort score is proportional to the difference.

24. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19, wherein the pre-established set of recommended temperature values includes a comfort curve.

25. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19, wherein the pre-established set of recommended temperature values includes a set of setpoints previously input into the thermostat.
