Abstract

A refrigerator includes a cabinet, a door including a door frame with an opening, a panel assembly provided at the opening and configured to allow an inside of the refrigerator to be seen through the panel assembly from an outside of the refrigerator, a knock detection device configured to detect a user'"'"'s knocking operation on the panel assembly, and a lighting unit provided inside the refrigerator and configured to turn on or off based on a signal of the knock detection device while the door is closed. The panel assembly includes a front panel, an insulation panel spaced apart from a rear surface of the front panel, and a spacer bar provided between the front panel and the insulation panel. An insulation space is defined between the front panel and the insulation panel, and the knock detection device is provided outside the insulation space.

Claims

1. A refrigerator comprising:

a cabinet configured to form a storage space;

a door configured to open and close the cabinet, and rotatably connected to the cabinet by a hinge, the door having a door frame with an opening which is in communication with the storage space;

a panel assembly provided at the opening and configured to allow an inside of the refrigerator to be seen through the panel assembly from an outside of the refrigerator, the panel assembly comprising;

a front panel,

an insulation panel spaced apart from a rear surface of the front panel, and

a spacer bar provided between the front panel and the insulation panel, wherein an insulation space is defined between the front panel and the insulation panel;

a knock detection device disposed to be in close contact with the panel assembly, and configured to detect a user'"'"'s knocking operation on the panel assembly; and

a lighting unit provided inside the refrigerator and configured to be turned on based on a signal of the knock detection device in a state in which the door is closed to allow the inside of the refrigerator to be seen through the panel assembly from the outside of the refrigerator,

wherein the knock detection device is provided outside the insulation space.

2. The refrigerator according to claim 1, further comprising a second detection device which is provided at the panel assembly to emit light and thus to confirm a user'"'"'s approach.

3. The refrigerator according to claim 2, wherein the lighting unit is turned on when detecting signals of both of the knock detection device and the second detection device are input.

4. The refrigerator according to claim 1, wherein a bezel which does not transmit light is formed at an edge of the front panel of the panel assembly, and the knock detection device is disposed at an area of the bezel.

5. The refrigerator according to claim 1, wherein the insulation panel is formed of transparent tempered glass.

6. The refrigerator according to claim 5, wherein the front panel forms an entire front surface of the door, and the insulation panel is formed to have a size smaller than the front panel, and formed at an internal area of the front panel.

7. The refrigerator according to claim 6, wherein the knock detection device is disposed at an edge of the front panel which extends to an outside of the insulation panel.

8. The refrigerator according to claim 1, wherein the knock detection device comprises a microphone module to detect the user'"'"'s knocking operation on the panel assembly, and holder to accommodate the microphone module.

9. The refrigerator according to claim 8, wherein the microphone module includes a microphone which senses a sound wave, and a microphone accommodation part which accommodates the microphone.

10. The refrigerator according to claim 9, wherein the microphone accommodation part is in contact with a rear surface of the front panel, and the microphone is spaced apart from the rear surface of the front panel to form a space between the front panel and the microphone.

11. The refrigerator according to claim 9, wherein the front panel includes a first area through which light from the lighting unit passes and a second area disposed outside the first area to at least partially block transmission of light therethrough, and

wherein the knock detection device is disposed at an area of the second area of the front panel.

12. The refrigerator according to claim 11, wherein the knock detection device is in contact with the second area of the front panel of the panel assembly.

13. A method of controlling a refrigerator that includes a panel assembly installed at an opening part of a door in communication with an inside of the refrigerator and configured to allow the inside of the refrigerator to be seen through the panel assembly from an outside of the refrigerator, the method comprising:

activating a knock detection device which detects a user'"'"'s knocking operation at an outside of the panel assembly of the door while the door is closed;

determining whether an input signal of the knock detection device is valid; and

turning on a lighting unit disposed inside the refrigerator by a main control part to allow the inside of the refrigerator to be seen through the panel assembly from the outside of the refrigerator based on a determination that the user'"'"'s knocking operation is valid,

wherein the panel assembly comprises a front panel, an insulation panel spaced apart from a rear surface of the front panel, and a spacer bar provided between the front panel and the insulation panel, wherein an insulation space is defined between the front panel and the insulation panel, and

wherein the knock detection device is in contact with the front panel.

14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the knock detection device is installed at a rear surface of a front panel of the panel assembly which forms an outer surface of the door, and detects a sound of surface vibration of the panel assembly.

15. The method according to claim 13, wherein a detection device which detects a user'"'"'s approach is provided at the door, and the main control part turns on the lighting unit when an input signal of the knock detection device is valid and the detection device detects the user'"'"'s approach.

16. The method according to claim 13, wherein the knock detection device comprises a microphone module to detect the user'"'"'s knocking operation on the panel assembly, and holder to accommodate the microphone module.

17. The method according to claim 16, wherein the microphone module includes a microphone which senses a sound wave, and a microphone accommodation part which accommodates the microphone.

18. The method according to claim 17, wherein the microphone accommodation part is in contact with a rear surface of the front panel, and the microphone is spaced apart from the rear surface of the front panel to form a space between the front panel and the microphone.

19. The method according to claim 13, wherein the front panel includes a first area through which light from the lighting unit passes and a second area disposed outside the first area to at least partially block transmission of light therethrough, and

wherein the knock detection device is disposed at an area of the second area of the front panel.

20. The method according to claim 19, wherein the knock detection device is in contact with the second area of the front panel of the panel assembly.
