Wireless network access prepayment systems and methods
First Claim
1. A method of providing network access, the method comprising:
- receiving, by a first merchant computer system operating at a merchant location associated with a merchant, a first request corresponding to a transaction requested by a customer with the merchant;
in response to a determination that the first request corresponds to a requested customer transaction with the merchant, transmitting, by the first merchant computer system, transaction information from the first merchant computer system to a remote host computer system, over a first communication network corresponding to a transaction settlement network;
receiving, at the first merchant computer system, a customer payment associated with the requested customer transaction;
in response to the transmission of the transaction information to the remote host computer system, receiving an activation confirmation from the remote host computer system, over the transaction settlement network, at the first merchant computer system;
in response to receiving the activation confirmation from the remote host computer system, providing, by the first merchant computer system, access information to the customer, wherein the access information is usable to obtain wireless network access for a customer client computer via a wireless network access point operating at the merchant location;
receiving, by a second computing device operating at the merchant location separately and independently from the first merchant computer system, a second request from the customer client computer corresponding to a wireless network access request, the second request including the access information;
validating, by the second computing device, the access information received from the customer client computer; and
in response to a determination by the second computing device that the second request corresponds to a validated network access request from the customer client computer, providing the customer client computer with wireless network access to the remote host computer system, via the wireless network access point at the merchant location, only while the customer client computer is at the merchant location, and wherein the wireless network access is provided over a packet-switched computer network connecting the second computing device to the remote host computer system, the packet-switched computer network having a different network infrastructure from the transaction settlement network.

Abstract
A method of providing network access includes entering network access information into a merchant device at a merchant location. The information relates to a request from a customer to obtain network access. The method also includes causing the information to be transmitted to a host computer system from the merchant device, receiving a payment from the customer, receiving activation confirmation from the host computer system at the merchant device, and providing a presentation instrument to the customer. The presentation instrument may be used by the customer to obtain network access. The method further includes using the presentation instrument to settle a transaction with the customer for merchandise.

15. A system for providing network access between a merchant location and a remote host computer system connected by two separate communication networks, the system comprising:
-
a remote host computer system, comprising; a processing unit including one or more processors; one or more memory devices having stored thereon computer-readable instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, cause the remote host computer system to receive and process prepaid wireless network access requests; and one or more network interfaces capable of supporting communications via a first transaction settlement network, and a second packet-switched computer network having a different network infrastructure from the first transaction settlement network; and a first merchant computer system, comprising; a first computer processor; and a first memory device in communication with the first computer processor having sets of instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the first computer processor, cause the first computer processor to; receive a first request corresponding to a transaction requested by a customer with a merchant; in response to a determination that the first request corresponds to a requested customer transaction with the merchant, transmit transaction information from the first merchant computer system operating at the merchant location to the remote host computer system over the first transaction settlement network; receive a customer payment associated with the requested customer transaction; in response to the transmission of the transaction information to the remote host computer system, receive an activation confirmation from the remote host computer system, over the first transaction settlement network; and in response to receiving the activation confirmation from the remote host computer system, provide access information to the customer, wherein the access information is usable to obtain wireless network access for a customer mobile computing device via a wireless network access point operating at the merchant location; and a second computing device configured to operate at the merchant location separately and independently from the first merchant computer system, the second computing device comprising; a second computer processor; and a second memory device in communication with the second computer processor having sets of instruction stored thereon which, when executed by the second computing device, cause the second computer processor to; receive a second request from the customer mobile computing device corresponding to a wireless network access request, the second request including the access information; validate, by the second computing device, the access information received from the customer mobile computing device; and in response to a determination that the second request corresponds to a validated network access request from the customer mobile computing device, provide the customer mobile computing device with secure wireless network access to the remote host computer system, via the wireless network access point operating at the merchant location, only while the customer mobile computing device is at the merchant location, and wherein the secure wireless network access is provided over the second packet-switched computer network connecting the second computing device to the remote host computer system via the different network infrastructure from the first transaction settlement network. - View Dependent Claims (16)
