Abstract

A variable-color region (106) of an information-presentation structure extends to an exposed surface (102) at a surface zone (112) and contains multiple variable-color cells (404), each extending to a part (406) of the zone. The cells normally appear along their parts of the zone as a principal color. Each cell that meets cellular threshold impact criteria in response to an object (104) impacting the zone at an object-contact area (116) temporarily becomes a criteria-meeting cell that temporarily appears along its part of the zone as changed color materially different from the principal color. A group of less than all the cells usually constitute criteria-meeting cells. The surface parts of the criteria-meeting cells form a print area (118) that closely matches the object-contact area in size, shape, and location. The color-change capability helps in making in/out calls in sports such as tennis.

Claims

1. An information-presentation (“

IP”

) structure comprising an object-impact (“

OI”

) structure having an exposed surface for being impacted by an object during an activity, the OI structure comprising a variable-color (“

VC”

) region which extends to the exposed surface at a surface zone, the VC region comprising a multiplicity of VC cells arranged laterally in a layer, each cell extending to a part of the surface zone, the cells normally appearing along their parts of the surface zone largely as a principal color during the activity, each cell that meets cellular threshold impact criteria in response to the object impacting the surface zone at an impact-dependent (“

ID”

) object-contact (“

OC”

) area spanning where the object contacts the surface zone temporarily becoming a criteria-meeting (“

CM”

) cell and temporarily appearing along its part of the surface zone largely as changed color materially different from the principal color, the OC area being capable of being of substantially arbitrary shape, the parts of the surface zone of the CM cells constituting an ID print area of the surface zone, the print area at least partly encompassing, at least mostly outwardly conforming largely to, and being largely concentric with the OC area.

2. An IP structure as in claim 1 wherein an ID group of the cells temporarily constitute CM cells, the ID group being a plurality of less than all the cells.

An IP structure as in claim 2 wherein the print area extends inside or/and outside the OC area, the VC region having a total fractional area difference averaging no more than 10%, the total fractional area difference determined as (A_pri+A_pro)/A_oc where (a) A_pri is the area, if any, by which the print area extends inside the OC area, A_pro is the area, if any, by which the print area extends outside the OC area, and A_oc is the area of the OC area.

4. An IP structure as in claim 1 wherein each cell comprises an impact-sensitive (“

IS”

) part and a color-change (“

CC”

) part, the IS part of each CM cell responding to the impact by providing a cellular impact effect, the CC part of each CM cell responding to its impact effect by causing that cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

5. An IP structure as in claim 4 wherein the IS part of each cell is situated at least partly between its part of the surface zone and its CC part, the IS part of each cell having a transrnissivity of at least 40% at at least one location along the IS part of that cell to light incident largely perpendicularly on the surface zone and at at least wavelengths of (a) at least a majority component of light suitable for forming the principal color and (b) at least a majority component of light suitable for forming the changed color.

6. An IP structure as in claim 4 wherein the IS part of each cell comprises a piezoelectric structure, the IS part of each CM cell providing its impact effect as at least a cellular electrical effect resulting from pressure of the object impacting the OC area.

An IP structure as in claim 4 wherein the IS part of each cell comprises a piezoelectric structure and an effect-modifying structure, the piezoelectric structure of each CM cell providing an initial cellular electrical effect resulting from pressure of the object impacting the OC area, the effect-modifying structure of each CM cell modifying its initial electrical effect to produce a modified cellular electrical effect as at least part of its impact effect.

An IP structure as in claim 4 wherein the CC part of each cell normally reflects light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming the principal color so as to cause that cell to normally appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the principal color, the CC part of each CM cell responding to its impact effect by temporarily reflecting light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color different from the principal color so as to cause that CM cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

9. An IP structure as in claim 8 wherein the CC part of each cell comprises one of the following light-processing structures:

dipolar suspension structure, electrochromic structure, electrofluidic structure, electrophoretic structure, electrowetting structure, photonic crystal structure, and reflective liquid-crystal structure.

An IP structure as in claim 4 wherein the CC part of each CM cell responds to its impact effect by temporarily emitting light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color different from the principal color so as to cause that cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

11. An IP structure as in claim 10 wherein the CC part of each cell comprises one of the following light-processing structures:

backlit liquid-crystal structure, cathodoluminescent structure, digital light processing structure, electrochromic fluorescent structure, electrochromic luminescent structure, electrochromic phosphorescent structure, electroluminescent structure, emissive microelectricalmechanicalsystem structure, field-emission structure, laser phosphor structure, light-emitting diode structure, light-emitting electrochemical cell structure, liquid-crystal-over-silicon structure, organic light-emitting diode structure, organic light-emitting transistor structure, photoluminescent structure, plasma panel structure, quantum-dot light-emitting diode structure, surface-conduction-emission structure, telescopic pixel structure, and vacuum fluorescent structure.

An IP structure as in claim 4 wherein the CC part of each cell comprises (a) a near electrode, (b) a far electrode situated generally opposite to, spaced apart from, and situated farther from that cell'"'"'s part of the surface zone than, the near electrode, and (c) a core section situated at least partly between the electrodes, light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming the principal color normally leaving the core section along the near electrode so as to enable that cell to normally appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the principal color, a cellular CC voltage being applied between the electrodes of each CM cell in response to its impact effect, the core section of each CM cell responding to its CC voltage by causing light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color different from the principal color to temporarily leave that CM cell along its near electrode so as to enable that CM cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

An IP structure as in claim 12 wherein one or both of the core section and far electrode of each cell normally reflects light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming the principal color so as to enable that cell to normally appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the principal color, one or both of the core section and far electrode of each CM cell responding to its CC voltage by temporarily reflecting light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color different from the principal color so as to enable that CM cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

14. An IP structure as in claim 12 wherein:

the core section of each cell comprises a supporting medium and a multiplicity of particles distributed in the medium;

the particles in each cell are normally distributed or/and oriented in the medium so as to cause one or both of the core section and far electrode of that cell to normally reflect light which has at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming the principal color and which leaves the core section of that cell along its near electrode; and

the particles in each CM cell respond to its CC voltage by translating or/and rotating for enabling one or both of its core section and far electrode to temporarily reflect light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color materially different from the principal color such that light temporarily leaving the core section of that CM cell along its near electrode consists mostly of this temporarily reflected light.

15. An IP structure as in claim 12 wherein:

the core section of each cell comprises a liquid;

the liquid in each cell is normally in a first cell liquid shape for causing one or both of the core section and far electrode of that cell to reflect light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming the principal color such that light normally leaving the core section of that cell along its near electrode consists mostly of this normally reflected light; and

the liquid in each CM cell responds to its CC voltage by changing to a second cell-liquid shape materially different from its first cell-liquid shape so as to cause one or both of its core section and far electrode to temporarily reflect light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color materially different from the principal color such that light temporarily leaving the core section of that CM cell along its near electrode consists mostly of this temporarily reflected light.

16. An IP structure as in claim 12 wherein the near electrode in each cell comprises graphene-containing material.

An IP structure as in claim 1 wherein the OI structure is incorporated into a tennis court for which the exposed surface has (a) two opposite baselines, (b) two opposite sidelines extending between the baselines to define inwardly an in-bounds playing area, (c) two opposite servicelines situated between the baselines and extending lengthwise between the sidelines, and (d) a centerline situated between the sidelines and extending lengthwise between the servicelines, a backcourt of the in-bounds area defined by each baseline, the sidelines, and the serviceline closest to that baseline so as to establish two backcourts, the object being a tennis ball, the surface zone comprising VC backcourt area which comprises two VC backcourt area portions respectively partly occupying the backcourts and respectively adjoining the servicelines along largely their entire lengths.

18. An IP structure as in claim 1 wherein the cells are laterally arranged in a two-dimensional array of rows and columns of the cells.

An IP structure as in claim 1 wherein the OI structure further includes an additional VC region extending to the exposed surface at an additional surface zone and laterally adjoining the other VC region so that the surface zones adjoin each other, the additional VC region comprising a multiplicity of additional VC cells arranged laterally in a layer, each additional VC cell extending to a part of the additional surface zone, the additional VC cells normally appearing along their parts of the additional surface zone largely as an additional color different from the principal color during the activity, each additional cell that meets additional cellular threshold impact criteria in response to the object impacting the additional surface zone at an ID OC area spanning where the object contacts the additional surface zone temporarily becoming an additional CM cell and temporarily appearing along its part of the additional surface zone largely as altered color materially different from the additional color, the OC area of the additional surface zone being capable of being of substantially arbitrary shape, the parts of the additional surface zone of the additional CM cells constituting an ID print area of the additional surface zone, the print area of the additional surface zone at least partly encompassing, at least mostly outwardly conforming largely to, and being largely concentric with its OC area.

20. An information-presentation (“

IP”

) structure comprising;

an object-impact (“

OI”

) structure having an exposed surface for being impacted by an object during an activity, the OI structure comprising a variable-color (“

VC”

) region which extends to the exposed surface at a surface zone, the VC region comprising a multiplicity of VC cells arranged laterally in a layer, each cell extending to a part of the surface zone, the cells normally appearing along their parts of the surface zone largely as a principal color during the activity, each cell that meets cellular threshold impact criteria in response to the object impacting the surface zone at an impact-dependent (“

ID”

) object-contact (“

OC”

) area spanning where the object contacts the surface zone temporarily becoming a threshold criteria-meeting (“

CM”

) cell, each threshold CM cell providing a cellular characteristics-identifying impact signal that identifies cellular supplemental impact information for the object impacting the OC area as experienced at that threshold CM cell; and

a color-change (“

CC”

) controller responsive to the impact signal of each threshold CM cell for combining the cellular supplemental impact information of that threshold CM cell with the cellular supplemental impact information of any other threshold CM cell to form general supplemental impact information, for deter mining whether the general supplemental impact information meets supplemental impact criteria, and, if so, for providing a cellular CC initiation signal to each threshold CM cell so as to cause it to temporarily become a full CM cell and temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as changed color materially different from the principal color, the parts of the surface zone of the full CM cells constituting an ID print area of the surface zone, the print area at least partly encompassing, at least mostly outwardly conforming largely to, and being largely concentric with the OC area.

21. An IP structure as in claim 20 wherein each cell comprises an impact-sensitive (“

IS”

) part and a CC part, the IS part of each threshold CM cell providing its cellular impact signal, the CC part of each full CM cell responding to its initiation signal by causing that full CM cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

An IP structure as in claim 21 wherein the CC part of each cell normally reflects light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming the principal color so as to cause that cell to normally appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the principal color, the CC part of each full CM cell responding to its initiation signal by temporarily reflecting light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color different from the principal color so as to cause that full CM cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

An IP structure as in claim 21 wherein the CC part of each full CM cell responds to its initiation signal by temporarily emitting light having at least a majority component of wavelength suitable for forming color different from the principal color so as to cause that full CM cell to temporarily appear along its part of the surface zone largely as the changed color.

An IP structure as in claim 20 wherein the OI structure is incorporated into a tennis court for which the exposed surface has (a) two opposite baselines, (b) two opposite sidelines extending between the baselines to define inwardly an in-bounds playing area, (c) two opposite servicelines situated between the baselines and extending lengthwise between the sidelines, and (d) a centerline situated between the sidelines and extending lengthwise between the servicelines, a backcourt of the in-bounds area defined by each baseline, the sidelines, and the serviceline closest to that baseline so as to establish two backcourts, the object being a tennis ball, the surface zone comprising VC backcourt area which comprises two VC backcourt area portions respectively partly occupying the backcourts and respectively adjoining the servicelines along largely their entire lengths.

25. An IP structure as in claim 20 wherein an ID group of the cells temporarily constitute full CM cells, the ID group being a plurality of less than all the cells.

26. An IP structure as in claim 20 wherein the supplemental impact criteria include size and/or shape criteria for the print area.

27. An IP structure as in claim 20 wherein (a) the supplemental impact information includes time duration of the object in contact with the OC area and (b) the supplemental impact criteria include OC time duration criteria.

28. An IP structure as in claim 20 wherein the cells are laterally arranged in a two-dimensional array of rows and columns of the cells.

29. An IP structure as in claim 20 wherein:

the OI structure further includes an additional VC region extending to the exposed surface at an additional surface zone and laterally adjoining the other VC region so that the surface zones adjoin each other, the additional VC region comprising a multiplicity of additional VC cells arranged laterally in a layer, each additional VC cell extending to a part of the additional surface zone, the additional VC cells normally appearing along their parts of the additional surface zone largely as an additional color different from the principal color during the activity, each additional cell that meets additional cellular threshold impact criteria in response to the object impacting the additional surface zone at an ID OC area spanning where the object contacts the additional surface zone temporarily becoming an additional threshold CM cell, each additional threshold CM cell providing an additional cellular characteristics-identifying impact signal that identifies additional cellular supplemental impact information for the object impacting the OC area of the additional surface zone as experienced at that additional threshold CM cell; and

the controller responds to the additional impact signal of each additional threshold CM cell by combining the additional cellular supplemental impact information of that additional threshold CM cell with the additional cellular supplemental impact information of any other additional threshold CM cell to form additional general supplemental impact information, for determining whether the additional general supplemental impact information meets additional supplemental impact criteria, and, if so, for providing an additional cellular CC initiation signal to each additional threshold CM cell so as to cause it to temporarily become an additional full CM cell and temporarily appear along its part of the additional surface zone largely as altered color materially different from the additional color, the parts of the additional surface zone of the additional CM cells constituting an ID print area of the additional surface zone, the print area of the additional surface zone at least partly encompassing, at least mostly outwardly conforming largely to, and being largely concentric with its OC area.
