Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments of apparatuses, systems, and methods for restricting functionality of guided surface wave receive equipment to unauthorized users. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a network interface adapted to receive a valid key code, and a guided surface wave receive structure configured to obtain electrical energy from a guided surface wave traveling along a lossy conducting medium, wherein the guided surface wave is embedded with a user key code. Accordingly, processing circuitry is further included and is adapted to validate the user key code against the valid key code. The processing circuitry is adapted to disable delivery of the electrical energy from the guided surface wave to an electrical load responsive to the user key code being invalidated.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a network interface adapted to receive a valid key code;

a guided surface wave receive structure configured to obtain electrical energy from a guided surface wave traveling along a terrestrial medium, wherein a phase delay of the guided surface wave receive structure is set to match a wave tilt angle associated with a complex Brewster angle of the terrestrial medium in a vicinity of the guided surface wave receive structure, wherein the guided surface wave is embedded with a user key code;

a processing circuitry adapted to validate the user key code against the valid key code, wherein the processing circuitry is adapted to disable delivery of the electrical energy from the guided surface wave to an electrical load responsive to the user key code being invalidated; and

the electrical load coupled to the guided surface wave receive structure, the electrical load being experienced as a load at an excitation source coupled to a guided surface waveguide probe generating the guided surface wave.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valid key code is received periodically from a power service controller device.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a reserved memory portion configured to store the valid key code.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valid key code is received over an encrypted network channel.

5. A method comprising:

obtaining, via processing circuitry coupled to guided surface wave receive structure, a user key code;

receiving electrical energy in a form of a guided surface wave using the guided surface wave receive structure, wherein a phase delay of the guided surface wave receive structure is set to match a wave tilt angle associated with a complex Brewster angle of a terrestrial medium in a vicinity of the guided surface wave receive structure, wherein the electrical energy is embedded with a valid key code;

processing, via the processing circuitry, the guided surface wave to obtain the user key code;

validating, via the processing circuitry, the user key code to compare against the valid key code, wherein the processing circuitry is adapted to disable delivery of the electrical energy from the guided surface wave to an electrical load responsive to the user key code being invalidated; and

supplying the electrical energy to an electrical load coupled to the guided surface wave receive structure responsive to a validated user key code.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the valid key code is received over a cellular communication channel.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the valid key code is received over an encrypted network channel.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the valid key code is received periodically from a power service controller device.

9. The method of claim 5, further comprising maintaining the user key code in volatile memory.

10. The method of claim 5, further comprising checking for an updated user key code upon startup of the processing circuitry.

11. The method of claim 5, further comprising authenticating a user associated with the guided surface wave receive structure before obtaining the user key code.

12. An apparatus comprising:

a guided surface waveguide probe configured to launch a guided surface wave over a lossy conducting medium;

a modulation circuitry configured to embed a valid key code within the guided surface wave; and

a controller device further configured to transmit a user key code in an out-of-band communication channel to guided surface wave receive equipment that is configured to receive the guided surface wave, wherein a positive comparison of the user key code against the valid key code indicates an authorization to deliver electrical energy obtained from the guided surface wave to an electrical load,

wherein the guided surface waveguide probe comprises a charge terminal elevated over the lossy conducting medium configured to generate at least one resultant field that synthesizes a wave front incident at a complex Brewster angle of incidence (θ

_i,B) of the lossy conducting medium.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the charge terminal is one of a plurality of charge terminals.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a feed network electrically coupled to the charge terminal, the feed network providing a phase delay (Φ

) that matches a wave tilt angle (Ψ

) associated with a complex Brewster angle of incidence (θ

_i,B) associated with the lossy conducting medium in a vicinity of the guided surface waveguide probe.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the charge terminal is one of a plurality of charge terminals.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the controller device periodically sends an updated valid key code to the guided surface wave receive equipment.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the updated valid key code is sent to a network address of a current subscriber of a power service provided by the guided surface waveguide probe.

18. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a key generator application adapted to generate the valid key code.

19. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the out-of-band communication channel comprises a network encrypted channel.
