Orientation-based playback device microphone selection
First Claim
1. A playback device comprising:
- a top face;
a bottom face opposite the top face, wherein the bottom face comprises a longest face of the playback device;
a side face perpendicular to the top face and the bottom face;
a set of microphones comprising;
a first subset of one or more microphones positioned along the top face; and
a second subset of one or more microphones positioned along the side face;
an orientation sensor;
one or more processors; and
tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon instructions executable by the one or more processors to cause the playback device to perform functions comprising;
determining that the playback device is in a horizontal orientation based on an indication from the orientation sensor that a longest face of the playback device is substantially parallel to a surface on which the playback device is positioned, wherein, in the horizontal orientation, the bottom face is substantially parallel to the surface and the side face is substantially perpendicular to the surface;
selecting the first subset of one or more microphones instead of the second subset of one or more microphones for sound input detection based on the determination that the playback device is in the horizontal orientation;
detecting, via the first subset of one or more microphones, a sound input;
processing the sound input detected via the first subset of one or more microphones; and
based on the sound input, executing one or more commands.

Abstract
Aspects of a multi-orientation playback device including at least one microphone array are discussed. A method may include determining an orientation of the playback device which includes at least one microphone array and determining at least one microphone training response for the playback device from a plurality of microphone training responses based on the orientation of the playback device. The at least one microphone array can detect a sound input, and the location information of a source of the sound input can be determined based on the at least one microphone training response and the detected sound input. Based on the location information of the source, the directional focus of the at least one microphone array can be adjusted, and the sound input can be captured based on the adjusted directional focus.

9. A tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon instructions executable by the one or more processors of a playback device that are executable to cause the playback device to:
-
determine that the playback device is in a horizontal orientation based on an indication from an orientation sensor on the playback device that a longest face of the playback device is substantially parallel to a surface on which the playback device is positioned, wherein, in the horizontal orientation, a bottom face of the playback device is substantially parallel to the surface and a side face of the playback device is substantially perpendicular to the surface, wherein the bottom face comprises a longest face and is opposite a top face of the playback device, and wherein the side face is perpendicular to the top face and the bottom face, select the first subset of one or more microphones positioned along the top face instead of a second subset of one or more microphones positioned along the side face for sound input detection based on the determination that the playback device is in the horizontal orientation; detect, via the first subset of one or more microphones, a sound input; process the sound input detected via the first subset of one or more microphones; and based on the sound input, execute one or more commands. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15)

16. A method comprising:
-
determining, by a playback device, that the playback device is in a horizontal orientation based on an indication from an orientation sensor on the playback device sensor that a longest face of the playback device is substantially parallel to a surface on which the playback device is positioned, wherein, in the horizontal orientation, a bottom face of the playback device is substantially parallel to the surface and a side face is substantially perpendicular to the surface, wherein, in the horizontal orientation, a bottom face of the playback device is substantially parallel to the surface and a side face of the playback device is substantially perpendicular to the surface, wherein the bottom face comprises a longest face and is opposite a top face of the playback device, and wherein the side face is perpendicular to the top face and the bottom face; selecting, by the playback device, a first subset of one or more microphones positioned along the top face instead of a second subset of one or more microphones positioned along the side face for sound input detection based on the determination that the playback device is in the horizontal orientation; detecting, by the playback device via the first subset of one or more microphones, a sound input; processing, by the playback device, the sound input detected via the first subset of one or more microphones; and based on the sound input, executing, by the playback device, one or more commands. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20)
