Abstract

A haptic device is configured to obtain a predetermined distance and establish a contact position. The haptic device may monitor sensor data in order to determine an activity using a content module and access a lookup table to associate a contact position with the determined activity. A position module will monitor the position of the haptic device and detect when the haptic device is at the contact position. At the contact position, the haptic device will produce a haptic effect. In some embodiments, a display device may be in communication with the haptic device in order to transmit and receive data.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

collecting, via one or more sensors of a first device, sensor data;

determining an activity using the sensor data of the first device;

defining, via a position module of the first device, an initial position of the first device and a distance from the initial position of the first device, the distance corresponding to the activity determined;

monitoring a position of the first device;

detecting the first device at a contact position, wherein the contact position is a position corresponding to the distance from the initial position of the first device; and

producing a haptic effect, by the first device, at the contact position.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining, using the sensor data from at least one sensor, the initial position of the first device.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving an input signal associated with the initial position of the first device.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

obtaining the distance from a lookup table value.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

outputting a control signal associated with the contact position to an actuator coupled to the first device, the control signal configured to cause the actuator to produce the haptic effect.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

calculating the speed of the first device from the initial position to the contact position; and

adjusting the control signal based on the speed of the first device, thereby changing the haptic effect, wherein a first control signal produces a different haptic effect from a second control signal.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying, on a display of a second device, an object at a virtual position, wherein the virtual position is a position corresponding to the contact position; and

displaying the first device as an object on the second device.

8. A system for providing feedback comprising:

a wearable device having at least one portion comprising a sensor, an actuator and a transceiver for transmitting and receiving information operatively coupled to a processor operative to;

collect sensor data associated with movement of the wearable device;

determine an activity corresponding to the server data;

define an initial position of the wearable device;

define a contact position, wherein the contact position is a distance from the initial position of the wearable device associated with the activity;

detect the wearable device at the contact position;

provide a control signal to the actuator to produce a haptic effect in response to the detecting the wearable device at the contact position; and

a display device comprising an optical display unit, configured to display an object at the contact position, operatively coupled to a processor and a transceiver, wherein the processor is operative to;

receive content and position data from the wearable device; and

display visual content on a display of the optical display unit.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein a position module of the wearable device is configured to determine the initial position using sensor data.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the processor of the wearable device is further programmed to:

receive an input signal from the display device; and

determine an initial position.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein the processor of the display device is a graphic processing unit.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein the processor of the available device is further operative to:

calculate the speed of the wearable device from the initial position to the contact position; and

adjust the control signal based on the speed, thereby changing the haptic effect, wherein a first, control signal produces a different haptic effect, from a second control signal.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein the processor of the display device is further operative to:

display the wearable device as a first object based on the activity determined by a content module of the wearable device; and

display a second object at the contact position corresponding to the activity determined by the content module.

14. A wearable device comprising:

a sensor;

an actuator;

a non-volatile, non-transitory memory;

a processor, operatively coupled to the actuator and non-transitory, non-volatile memory, the processor operative to;

collect sensor data via the sensor associated with movement of the wearable device;

determine an activity corresponding to the sensor data;

monitor a position of the wearable device;

detect the wearable device at a contact position associated with the activity, wherein the contact position is a position corresponding to a distance from an initial position of the wearable device; and

provide a haptic effect at the contact position.

15. The wearable device of claim 14, wherein the processor is further operative to:

receive an input signal associated with the initial position of the wearable device.

16. The wearable device of claim 14, wherein the processor is further operative to:

obtain the distance from a lookup table stored in the non-volatile, non-transitory memory comprising a plurality of content entries, each entry having a corresponding distance value, wherein a content entry corresponds to determined or received sensor data.

17. The wearable device of claim 14, wherein the processor is further operative to:

output a control signal, associated with detecting the wearable device at the contact position, to the actuator, the control signal configured to cause the actuator to produce the haptic effect.

18. The wearable device of claim 17, wherein the processor is further operative to:

calculate a speed of the wearable device from the initial position to the contact position, wherein the speed is calculated as a ratio of the distance over a time; and

adjust, in response to the speed, the control signal, thereby changing the haptic effect.

19. The wearable device of claim 14, further comprising:

a transceiver operatively coupled to the processor, wherein the processor is operative to connect wirelessly with a display device; and

wherein the transceiver sends position and content data to the display device.

20. The wearable device of claim 19, wherein a virtual object is output on the display device, the virtual object being at least one of a keyboard and a boxing bag.
