Abstract

The normal roles of wireless stations and wireless access points in initiating the establishment of wireless connections may be reversed without the need for changes in the network interfaces for either the station or access point device. This capability may be used to allow wireless devices acting as access points, but on which service clients operate, to initiate the establishment of a connection with a station, on which a wireless service provider operates. Discovery of services between wireless devices can be provided prior to establishing a connection between the devices. A service client device providing access point functionality may broadcast an invitation for service advertisements and then receive service advertisements from relevant service providers acting as wireless stations. An information element may be included as part of periodically broadcast administrative messages to wirelessly convey an invitation for service advertisements. In response to a service advertisement, the access point may send to the wireless station an invitation to connect, prompting the wireless station to begin to establish a connection according to a wireless communication protocol.

Claims

1. A method for connecting to an infrastructure mode wireless network, the method comprising:

transmitting, by a computing device, an advertisement for a service provided over the infrastructure mode wireless network via the computing device;

receiving, by the computing device, an indication for the computing device to initiate a connection to an access point for the infrastructure mode wireless network, wherein the indication is received from an access point as part of an attempt to access the service provided via the computing device, wherein the attempt to access the service is in response to the transmitted advertisement;

in response to the indication, transmitting, by the computing device, a request to the access point for the computing device to connect to the infrastructure mode wireless network;

receiving, by the computing device, a response from the access point, the response including an acceptance of the request to connect to the infrastructure node wireless network; and

connecting, by the computing device, to the infrastructure mode wireless network via the access point.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving an advertisement invitation, wherein the advertisement invitation requests transmission of advertisements regarding services being offered, and wherein the transmitting of the advertisement is in response to the advertisement invitation.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein:

the advertisement for the service is transmitted to the access point before the indication is received; and

the advertisement for the service is transmitted to the access point in response to the received advertisement invitation.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the advertisement invitation is received in an information element of a beacon periodically transmitted from the access point.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises:

providing the service to the access point.

6. A computing device for providing a service, the computing device comprising:

a network interface configured to interface the computing device to an access point for a wireless network; and

a memory and a processor that are respectively configured to store and execute instructions, including instructions to cause the computing device to;

transmit, by the computing device, an advertisement for a service provided over an infrastructure mode wireless network via the computing device;

receive an indication for the computing device to initiate a connection to the access point, the indication transmitted by the access point in conjunction with an attempt to access the service provided by the computing device, the attempt to access the service being in response to the transmitted advertisement;

in response to the indication, transmit a request to the access point for the computing device to connect to the wireless network;

receive a response from the access point, the response including an acceptance of the request to connect to the wireless network; and

connect to the wireless network via the access point.

7. The computing device of claim 6, wherein the instructions are also to cause the computing device to:

receive an advertisement invitation, wherein the advertisement invitation requests transmission of advertisements regarding services being offered, and wherein the transmission of the advertisement is in response to the advertisement invitation.

8. The computing device of claim 7, wherein:

the advertisement for the service is transmitted to the access point before the indication is received; and

the advertisement for the service is transmitted to the access point in response to the received advertisement invitation.

9. The computing device of claim 7, wherein advertisement invitation is received in an information element of a beacon periodically transmitted from the access point.

10. The computing device of claim 6, wherein the instructions are also to cause the computing device to:

provide the service to the access point.

11. The computing device of claim 6, wherein:

the wireless network is an infrastructure mode wireless network; and

the network interface is also configured to interface the computing device to the infrastructure mode wireless network as a station device.

12. The computing device of claim 6, wherein the indication is embedded in an information element of a probe response frame, and wherein the probe response frame includes a Media Access Control (MAC) address of the computing device and a Basic Service Set Identifier (BSSID) of the wireless network.

13. An apparatus for providing a service via an infrastructure mode wireless network, the apparatus comprising:

a network interface configured to;

transmit information to at least one computing device; and

receive information from the at least one computing device; and

a memory and a processor that are respectively configured to store and execute instructions, including instructions to cause the apparatus to;

while the apparatus has not joined the infrastructure mode wireless network, transmit an offer to provide a service to the at least one computing device over the infrastructure mode wireless network;

receive, in response to the offer to provide the service to the at least one computing device over the infrastructure mode wireless network, a request for the apparatus to connect to the infrastructure mode wireless network, the request for the apparatus to connect to the infrastructure mode wireless network being in conjunction with a request from the at least one computing device for the service;

in response to the request for the service, connect to the infrastructure mode wireless network; and

provide the service, over the infrastructure mode wireless network, to the at least one computing device.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein:

the at least one computing device is an access point for the infrastructure mode wireless network; and

the memory and the processor are also respectively configured to store and execute instructions to cause the apparatus to;

transmit a request to join the infrastructure mode wireless network; and

receive a response to the request to join the infrastructure mode wireless network, the response including an acceptance of the request to connect to the infrastructure mode wireless network.

15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein:

the wireless network is an IEEE 802.11 infrastructure mode network that does not natively support initiation of connections to the infrastructure mode network by access points; and

the at least one computing device is an access point for the infrastructure mode wireless network.

16. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the information regarding the service is received by the access point device in an advertisement invitation broadcast packet.

17. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the service is a printing service or a display service.

18. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the request for the service is also a request for the apparatus to initiate a connection to the at least one computing device.

19. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein:

the memory and the processor are also respectively configured to store and execute instructions to cause the apparatus to;

transmit the offer to provide the service in response to an advertisement invitation received from the at least one computing device, wherein the advertisement invitation requests transmission of advertisements regarding available services.

20. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the at least one computing device is a mobile telephone.
