1. A method comprising:

  • presenting an interface enabling an indication of one or more thresholds for a key performance indicator (KPI), each threshold defining an end of a range of values corresponding to a particular state of the KPI from among a plurality of states;

    wherein the KPI is defined by a search query that produces a value derived from machine data identified in one or more entity definitions, the value indicative of a measure of a service at a point in time or during a period of time, andwherein each of the entity definitions represents a respective entity that performs the service and includes an identification of machine data pertaining to the entity;

    receiving via the interface the indication of at least one of the thresholds for the KPI; and

    recording threshold information in computer storage in association with the KPI in accordance with the received indication so as to condition an automatic process for determining a state of the KPI from the plurality of states based at least in part on an instance of the value produced by the search query;

    wherein the machine data is produced by one or more components within an information technology environment and reflects activity within the information technology environment;

    wherein the method is performed by one or more processing devices coupled to the computer storage.
