Abstract

A system and method are described for distributed antenna wireless communications. For example, a method implemented within a wireless transmission system comprised of a plurality of wireless client devices and a plurality of distributed antennas is described comprising: computing channel state information (CSI) for wireless communication channels between the plurality of base distributed antennas and the wireless client devices; computing precoding weights from the channel state information; precoding data using the precoding weights prior to wireless transmission from the plurality of distributed antennas to the wireless client devices; and wirelessly transmitting the precoded data from the distributed antennas to each of the wireless client devices, wherein the precoding causes radio frequency interference between the plurality of base stations but simultaneously generating a plurality of non-interfering radio frequency user channels between the plurality of distributed antennas and the plurality of wireless client devices.

Claims

1. A multi-user multiple antenna system (MU-MAS) comprising of:

one or a plurality of centralized processing units;

a plurality of distributed transceiver stations communicatively coupled to the one or a plurality of centralized processing units via a network;

a plurality of client devices;

wherein the centralized processing units estimate the uplink channel state information (CSI) between the distributed transceiver stations and the client devices, and the CSI between the distributed transceiver stations, and exploit channel reciprocity to derive the downlink CSI.

2. The system as in claim 1 wherein the downlink CSI is used for computing pre-coding weights to send a plurality of concurrent non-interfering data streams from the plurality of distributed transceiver stations to the plurality of client devices.

3. The system as in claim 1 wherein the uplink CSI is used to demodulate a plurality of concurrent non-interfering data streams received by the plurality of distributed transceiver stations from the plurality of client devices.

4. The system as in claim 1 wherein the downlink or uplink CSI are used for computing a transmission mode for each of the plurality of client devices.

5. The system as in claim 4 wherein the transmission mode comprises of a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) or MU-MAS spatial processing scheme.

6. A multi-user multiple antenna system (MU-MAS) comprising of:

one or a plurality of centralized processing units;

a plurality of distributed transceiver stations communicatively coupled to the one or a plurality of centralized processing units via a network;

a plurality of client devices communicatively coupled to the plurality of distributed transceiver stations via a plurality of wireless links;

wherein the plurality of distributed transceiver stations are equipped with a plurality of clocks synchronized in time and frequency to enable transmitting and receiving a plurality of concurrent non-interfering data streams via spatial processing over the wireless links.

7. The system as in claim 6 wherein the clocks are free-running, and the centralized processing units employ synchronization methods to estimate and compensate for time and/or frequency offsets to synchronize the clocks.

8. The system as in claim 7 wherein the synchronization methods are enabled by sending one or a plurality of training signals from one or a plurality of distributed transceiver stations.

9. The system as in claim 7 wherein the training signals are sent periodically to estimate iteratively the time and frequency offsets.

10. The system as in claim 9 wherein estimating iteratively is used for improving the estimates of the time and/or frequency offsets.

11. The system as in claim 7 wherein the synchronization methods converge after a period of time.

12. The system as in claim 7 wherein the synchronization methods are re-run every time one of the plurality of distributed transceiver stations changes its location or a new transceiver station is added to the MU-MAS.

13. The system as in claim 6 wherein the clocks are GPS disciplined oscillators (GPSDOs), and synchronization in time and/or frequency is achieved by using GPS signals.

14. The system as in claim 6 wherein the clocks are synchronized in time and/or frequency by sharing the same reference signal provided by power lines.

15. The system as in claim 14 wherein the reference signal is a 50 Hz or 60 Hz signal.

16. The system as in claim 7 wherein the training signals are orthogonal.

17. The system as in claim 7 wherein the training signals are used for initial triggering of the distributed transceiver stations.

18. The system as in claim 17 wherein the training signals are pulse per second (PPS) reference signals.

19. The system as in claim 7 wherein the training signals are Zadoff-Chu sequences.

20. The system as in claim 7 wherein time and/or frequency offsets are estimated by correlating the training signals.

21. The system as in claim 7 wherein the time and/or frequency offsets are coarse or fine offsets.
