Abstract

The disclosure is directed to programming implantable stimulators to deliver stimulation energy via one or more implantable leads having complex electrode array geometries. The disclosure also contemplates guided programming to select electrode combinations and parameter values to support efficacy. The techniques may be applied to a programming interface associated with a clinician programmer, a patient programmer, or both. A user interface permits a user to view electrodes from different perspectives relative to the lead. For example, the user interface provides a side view of a lead and a cross-sectional view of the lead. The user interface may include an axial control medium to select and/or view electrodes at different axial positions along the length of a lead, and a rotational control medium to select and/or view electrodes at different angular positions around a circumference of the lead.

Claims

1. A lead comprising:

a lead housing defining a longitudinal axis and a circumference;

a ring stimulation electrode disposed at a first axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing; and

a plurality of stimulation electrodes disposed at respective different positions around the circumference of the lead housing, wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes comprises at least three stimulation electrodes, and wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes is disposed at a second axial position proximal from a distal end of the lead housing and different than the first axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing.

2. The lead of claim 1, wherein the ring stimulation electrode encircles an entirety of the circumference of the lead housing.

The lead of claim 1, wherein the ring stimulation electrode is a first ring stimulation electrode, and wherein the lead further comprises a second ring stimulation electrode disposed at a third axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing different than the first and second axial positions.

4. The lead of claim 1, wherein:

the plurality of stimulation electrodes is a first plurality of stimulation electrodes;

the lead further comprises a second plurality of stimulation electrodes disposed at respective different angular positions around the circumference of the lead housing,

the second plurality of stimulation electrodes comprises at least three stimulation electrodes; and

the second plurality of stimulation electrodes is disposed at a third axial position different than the first and second axial positions along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing.

5. The lead of claim 4, wherein the first plurality of stimulation electrodes is circumferentially aligned with the second plurality of stimulation electrodes.

6. The lead of claim 4, wherein the first plurality of stimulation electrodes is circumferentially staggered from the second plurality of stimulation electrodes.

7. The lead of claim 4, wherein the first plurality of stimulation electrodes comprises a different number of stimulation electrodes than the second plurality of stimulation electrodes.

8. The lead of claim 1, wherein each stimulation electrode of the plurality of stimulation electrodes comprises an arc-like segment.

9. The lead of claim 8, wherein each stimulation electrode of the plurality of stimulation electrodes comprises a non-rectangular shape.

10. The lead of claim 1, wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes comprises at least four stimulation electrodes.

11. The lead of claim 1, wherein the lead housing comprises a marker at a circumferential location that identifies a circumferential orientation of the electrical stimulation lead.

12. The lead of claim 11, wherein the marker comprises a radiopaque marker.

13. The lead of claim 1, wherein the lead is configured to be implanted within a patient, and wherein the electrical stimulation lead is configured to be coupled to an implantable medical device that is configured to generate electrical stimulation signals for deep brain stimulation therapy.

14. The lead of claim 1, wherein a space between two adjacent electrodes of the plurality of stimulation electrodes is approximately 1 degree to approximately 20 degrees of the circumference of the lead housing.

15. A system comprising:

a lead comprising;

a lead housing defining a longitudinal axis and a circumference;

a ring stimulation electrode disposed at a first axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing; and

a plurality of stimulation electrodes disposed at respective different positions around the circumference of the lead housing, wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes comprises at least three stimulation electrodes, and wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes is disposed at a second axial position proximal from a distal end of the lead housing and different than the first axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing; and

an implantable medical device configured to be coupled to the lead.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the ring stimulation electrode is a first ring stimulation electrode, and wherein the lead further comprises a second ring stimulation electrode disposed at a third axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing different than the first and second axial positions.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes is a first plurality of stimulation electrodes, and wherein the lead further comprises a second plurality of stimulation electrodes disposed at respective different angular positions around the circumference of the lead housing, and wherein the second plurality of stimulation electrodes is disposed at a third axial position different than the first and second axial positions along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the implantable medical device comprises a stimulation generator configured to generate electrical stimulation signals deliverable to a patient via the lead.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the implantable medical device is configured to independently utilize each electrode of the plurality of stimulation electrodes to deliver the electrical stimulation signals.

20. The system of claim 15, further comprising an external programmer comprising a display, the external programmer configured to:

generate a stimulation field model that represents where electrical stimulation will propagate from one or more electrodes of the plurality of stimulation electrodes;

display, via the display, the stimulation field model in conjunction with a representation of the plurality of stimulation electrodes; and

receive stimulation field input from a user that modifies at least one of a size, shape, or location of the stimulation field model relative to the representation of the plurality of stimulation electrodes.

21. An electrical stimulation lead comprising:

a lead housing defining a longitudinal axis and a circumference;

a first ring stimulation electrode disposed at a first axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing;

a second ring stimulation electrode disposed at a second axial position along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing different than the first axial position, wherein the first and second ring stimulation electrodes each encircle an entirety of the circumference of the lead housing; and

at least three stimulation electrodes disposed at respective different positions around the circumference of the lead housing, wherein the at least three stimulation electrodes are disposed at a third axial position proximal from a distal end of the lead housing and different than the first and second axial positions along the longitudinal axis of the lead housing.
