1. A vehicle door control system for a vehicle having a vehicle body and a vehicle door, comprising:

  • a check arm having an end that is mounted to one of the vehicle body and the vehicle door;

    a check arm holder at least a portion of which is mounted to the other of the vehicle body and the vehicle door; and

    a controller that is configured to receive input from at least one sensor relating to a force being applied to the vehicle door, wherein the controller includes a memory and a processor, wherein the processor is programmed to selectably cause the check arm holder to apply a selected check force to the check arm to hold the vehicle door stationary, and, in at least a selected set of conditions, the controller is programmed to at least partially release the check force when the processor determines that the force being applied to the vehicle door reaches a selected initiation force,wherein the at least one sensor is positioned entirely within an interior of the vehicle door and is positioned to sense movement of the vehicle door without direct contact by a user with the at least one sensor, wherein the controller is programmed to determine via signals from the at least one sensor whether a force applied by the user on the vehicle door in any one of an opening direction and a closing direction exceeds the selected initiation force.
