1. A computer-implemented method comprising the steps of:

  • using a retailer terminal computer comprising a microprocessor and a memory, receiving input specifying items for purchase in transactions with customers;

    using the retailer terminal computer, responsive to receiving a first input via an interface of the retailer terminal computer that is configured to accept at least a first customer identifier associated with a first transaction, storing the first input in the memory of the retailer terminal computer, using the microprocessor to access at least one record that stores customer identifiers in association with respective known customer identities, and to determine that the first customer identifier is associated with a known customer identity;

    using the retailer terminal computer, identifying one or more digital coupons stored in the memory in association with the first customer identifier;

    using the retailer terminal computer, at least partially responsive to receiving the first input and determining that the first customer identifier is associated with a known customer identity, using a credit card reader, causing performance of the first transaction including redemption of the one or more digital coupons associated with the first customer identifier;

    using the retailer terminal computer, receiving new coupon data specifying a new coupon offer, the new coupon offer having been selected based on a first item of a plurality of items that were purchased in the first transaction;

    using the retailer terminal computer, generating an electronic receipt including, adjacent to information about the first item, data describing the new coupon offer and a second coupon offer, the second coupon offer having been selected based on payment information included within the electronic receipt and the use of which is conditioned upon a type of payment used in a subsequent transaction that is different from the type of payment displayed in the payment information;

    using the retailer terminal computer, transmitting the electronic receipt for the first transaction via an email message to an email address that is the same as the first customer identifier;

    using the retailer terminal computer, at least partially responsive to not receiving, via the interface and for a second transaction, any input that indicates any customer identifier associated with any known customer identity, performing the second transaction, in which a second set of one or more items is purchased, and printing a printed receipt for the second transaction.
