Method and mobile terminal for performing random access
First Claim
1. A mobile terminal comprising:
- communication circuitry; and
processing circuitry is configured to cause the communication circuitry to;
transmit to a network (i) a first type of random access preamble selectable by the mobile terminal from a set of random access preambles or (ii) a second type of random access preamble directly allocated to the mobile terminal by the network;
receive a random access response from the network in response to the first type of random access preamble or the second type of random access preamble; and
perform a discontinuous reception (DRX) operation that allows the mobile terminal to monitor a Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) discontinuously, where the DRX operation includes an active time period during which the mobile terminal is configured to monitor the PDCCH after successful reception of the random access response for the second type of random access preamble until a transmission from the network addressed to a Cell-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (C-RNTI) is received,wherein for transmission of the first type of random access preamble, the processing circuitry is configured to;
select a random access preamble among the set of random access preambles;
identify resources to be used in transmitting the selected random access preamble; and
cause the communication circuitry to transmit the selected random access preamble using the identified resources.

Abstract
A random access procedure between a mobile terminal and a network is performed based upon the characteristics of a RACH preamble transmitted by the terminal. A first type of random access preamble is selectable by the terminal from a set of random access preambles, and a second type of random access preamble is directly allocated to the terminal by the network. The network responds with a random access response. The terminal performs a discontinuous reception (DRX) operation that allows it to monitor a downlink control channel discontinuously. The DRX operation includes an active time period during which the terminal monitors the control channel after successful reception of the random access response for the second type of random access preamble until a transmission from the network addressed to a Cell-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (C-RNTI) associated with the terminal is received.
