- receiving one or more signals associated with a monitored analyte level from an analyte sensor of an analyte monitoring device, wherein the sensor is in contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface;
retrieving a first operational state of the device, wherein the first operational state is based on a prior signal associated with the analyte sensor, wherein the prior signal is received before the one or more signals;
comparing a first signal level of the prior signal and a second signal level of the one or more signals against a predetermined level; and
transitioning the analyte monitoring device from the first operational state to a second operational state based on the comparison step.
